October 30 Mme. Reggiani filled in for me last week. This week we have solidified some of the simple locutions introduced over previous weeks. We still need work on the masculine/feminine definite article (le/la) and especially the plural "les." I.e., un train, LES trainS. We also introduced some infinitive verb forms: marcher (to walk,) habiter (to reside), appeler (to call). It's always good for the kids to review their short bio statements: my name is..., I am 9 years old etc. (They know which ones.) Also, and this will remain true for the rest of the year, we are accumulating more and more vocabulary and the students really must review them regularly. The main vocab sheet is attached to this page. We are still on the lists to on the left side of the page. Thanks for helping reinforce these items. Bon weekend. JD ___________________________________________________________________________________ This week we continue to learn the domestic vocab (attached, left side of page). Please help your child memorize these words, and in particular the phrases (ou est..., etc). Some are still wrestling with the concept of "it is" (a pencil, etc.) as in "C'est un crayon" (phonetically, "set-uh-crayon"). I've also attached the quiz we will be taking in class next time. Next we will beging review of self descriptors: My name is ___. I am __ years old. etc. Stay tuned for that. Thanks for your help at home. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Well, I seem not to have saved my posting for this week, though the vocab file did attach successfully! Very sorry about that. The class continues to explore the gender designation of French nouns (C'est UNE pomme. C'est UN aigle.) Please help reinforce the household vocab. The grammar and vocab points below remain fair game for review. JD __________________________________________________________________________________ Bonjour. tous. Recently the students have made a breakthrough: they are now really hearing the difference between "Qu-est ce que c'est?" and "Quelle heure est-il?" Their vocab is growing slowly (we have work to do there), they're adding numbers in French, and - to a surprising degree - showing a sensitivity to the gender of nouns: c'est un stylo; c'est UNE pomme. I'm delighted. Smuggling them oreos does't hurt. Please help me reinforce the family member names: (mere, pere, etc.) and a vocab sheet that we will be working on for sometime to come. I have uploaded that list to a file at the bottom of this page for your convenience. Also, I have asked the students to bring in some knick knacks of every day things (for example, currently we have a dog, chat, Eiffer tower.) We use these to reinforce the grammar and vocab. Please also send in your $5 for the sketch book we are about to begin work in. Merci bien, JD ___________________________________________________________________________________ Greetings and thanks for your patience as I set up a teacher page. The students' work on the sentences I sent home last week was very successful. Thanks for helping to reinforce the vocab at home. As I wrote last week: I don't want to overdo the "homework" aspect of these assignments, so let's call them review. Bottom line, even 5 - 10 minutes of review between classes will help the students have more success. This week we will continue to work with the verb avoir (to have) and I will introduce etre (to be.) I hope to make progress on the students grasp of le chien (or la pomme) as opposed to un chien (or une pomme), les chiens, les pommes, etc. We will also review the time, which the students already have a good grasp of: Quel heure est-il? Il est une heure, deux heures, etc. We will introduce the names of family members: ma mere, mon pere, mon frere, ma soeur, cousin/cousine. I have also ordered some sketch books that we are going to turn into "Mon Livre de Francais" via student art work during the year. These cost about $5 each if I could trouble you send that amount in at your convenience. Many thanks, JD
