World Languages Curriculum Overview

 

Students will:

 

Junior Kindergarten-Second Grade

 

  • Demonstrate understanding of basic words and phrases in Spanish, including numbers, colors, family, animals, foods, calendar, weather, and parts of the body
  • Respond orally to very familiar vocabulary using memorized words and phrases
  • Imitate sounds and intonation of Spanish
  • Participate in age-appropriate cultural activities such as games, songs, and holiday celebrations

 

Third Grade and Fourth Grade

 

  • Engage in simple daily conversations and narration on familiar topics
  • Respond to verbal commands in the target language
  • Read simple material on very familiar topics and identify cognates and thematic vocabulary
  • Communicate orally and in writing on familiar topics using memorized words, phrases, and short sentences
  • Imitate sounds and intonation of the target language
  • Deepen their understanding of the target cultures through holiday celebrations, cuisine, games, and art
  • Gain familiarity with the history and geography of Spanish-speaking countries

 

Fifth Grade

 

  • Respond to simple commands in the target language
  • Reproduce accurately the sounds and intonation of the target language
  • Utilize simple vocabulary to engage in conversation
  • Practice vocabulary through songs and games
  • Read and write simple phrases and commands using the present tense
  • Make connections between the target language and how it is used in his or her everyday life
  • Gain familiarity with the target culture(s) through native speakers, music, and cultural projects

 

Sixth Grade

 

  • Respond to commands in the target language
  • Identify vocabulary and basic grammatical structure in the target language
  • Apply correct vocabulary and grammatical concepts when speaking in a variety of situations
  • Demonstrate conversational skills through creative projects
  • Write simple sentences using the present tense
  • Read short paragraphs and process pertinent information
  • Compare and contrast the target culture(s) with his or her own language on an ongoing basis
  • Gain familiarity with the target culture(s) through native speakers, music, and cultural projects

 

Seventh Grade

 

  • Respond to a series of  multiple commands in the target language
  • Distinguish between tenses
  • Demonstrate mastery of vocabulary and grammar skills while speaking and writing
  • Use more complex sentences incorporating a variety of vocabulary and grammatical concepts
  • Read and process pertinent information in paragraphs and narratives
  • Develop greater awareness of target culture(s) through hands-on cultural projects
  • Research the history, arts, and geography of the target culture(s)

 

Eighth Grade

 

  • Use increasingly complex sentence structures
  • Demonstrate mastery of vocabulary and complex grammatical concepts while speaking
  • Utilize a variety of tenses
  • Continue to  develop skills in written composition using a variety of vocabulary and grammatical concepts
  • Read a variety of literary selections in the target language
  • Develop greater awareness of target culture(s) through hands-on cultural projects
  • Research the history, arts, geography and literature of the target culture(s)
