November 2, 2009 Dear Parents, The children have been doing a good job learning our routine and working together cooperatively. They have been striving to develop good decision-making habits along with being self-sufficient and independent. Over the past weeks our themes and units have included: Autumn, Apples, Pumpkins, Trees, Fire Safety, and Columbus Day. We’ve completed various activities to go along with our units, such as: taking a nature walk and collecting leaves. We made nature masks with the items we collected on our walk. The children completed a leaf graph and did sponge leaf painting and prints. We estimated how much our pumpkin weighed and measured. In religion we learned about our Creator, the Mass, angels, saints that had feast days and listened to stories from the Children’s Bible. The children did acts of kindness and wrote them on paper leaves for our religion bulletin board. I am very proud of the manner in which the children conduct themselves at Mass and Adoration. We have officially started the Olweus Bully Program. At our first couple of meetings we discussed: what bullying is and how do we help someone who is being bullied. The children also role played bullying scenarios and strategies for helping someone being bullied. I read the story, “Berenstain Bears Bullying.” At our last meeting we discussed how to be more observant of each other, looking after and taking care of each other. One of our service projects this fall will be to participate in the Scholastic Book Club’s “Classrooms Care Program.” We will read and/or listen to 100 books by December 20, 2009. Upon completion, the Scholastic Book Club will donate 100 books to children in need. If you would like to share a favorite story of yours and be a guest reader, please let me know. We would like to have you come into our classroom. This month our themes will be Election Day, Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving. Also, Mr. Teale, Madelyn’s dad, will be coming into our class to talk to us about Safety. He is a lieutenant for the Colonie Police Department. Thank you to everyone for helping to make our Halloween Party a great success. Thank you, ; Mrs. Jones P.S. Thursday November 5th is St Pius Day at Barnes and Noble!
