Wikis

What is a wiki?

A wiki is an online document (a webpage) that can be edited by anyone with the password to do so (example: wikipedia).  How is this different than a blog?  Blogging is usually written by one author with others only being allowed to leave comments. Wikis can allow multiple authors to add to each other work and even edit each other (again think wikipedia).

How is using a wiki relevant to teaching?

Some teachers use wikis for homework centers.  They attach the homework assignments so the student can access the work from any computer (no more excuses about leaving the folder at school).

Some teachers use a wiki so the entire class can contribute to a compilation of class notes on a subject (their own little wikipedia).

Some teachers use a wiki to post a question and the students can log in and respond to the question and to their classmates answers.

Some teachers create lists of relevant links on their wiki for kids to click on for a certain subject they may be learning about in class.

Some teachers have students write book reviews on their wiki which creates a nice book list by the end of the year. The list can be expanded for years to come.  How fun for a fourth grader to read a book recommended by his older brother from three years ago when he was in fourth grade.

We think the best educational wiki is pbwiki because there are no ads and lots of teacher control.

Here are examples of real educational wikis in action.
