Podcasting
What is a podcast? According to iuniverse.com a podcast is an audio broadcast available on the Web to the public for free downloading to a personal computer or a digital audio player. Despite its name, a podcast may be played through a variety of digital audio software and hardware. Use is not limited to the iPod brand products developed by Apple.
The downloading is key which makes it important that the listeners' computers must be able to automatically download the latest issues through itunes or rss feed. It isn't enough to just put it on your class website. Parents may listen once and forget to check back in. If it is available on itunes or rss, your listeners can subscribe to the podcast. Then the podcasts are automaticaly updated for your listeners. How great is that? Everytime they plug their ipod in to the computer, your latest episodes will be downloaded for them! How do we make a podcast? | We use the free source software Audacity to record our voices. Music is then imported in and mixed using Audacity. I get my music from soundzabound so I know I'm not breaking any copyright rules. I had a cheap microphone but it couldn't stand up to our wear and tear as you can hear in some of the podcasts (background noise). I invested in the Alesis microphone and the sound is crystal clear as you will hear in upcoming podcasts. I upload through Powermedia Plus which is a free resource for all NY state educators. | Examples of Podcasts in Education The Educational Podcast Network is a great place to browse the various uses of podcasting in education. One of the best elementary level podcasts is Radio WillowWeb.
