CURRICULUM: Language Arts: (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) The language arts program for RBUSD K-5 is Houghton Mifflin. It covers all the California State Standards. Please see the attached report cards for expectations. In addition, we will be piloting a Reader’s and/or Writer’s workshop school wide. 2nd grade: Students will have to read a chapter book about a famous person in history and write a biography report. Spelling Tests: Spelling words will be given to the students on Mondays. If they get 100% on their pre-test, they will be given different words for their Friday test. Their original spelling words will be in their homework packet. If they get the new spelling words, it is up to you and your child to find the new spelling words in their mail and use those for their homework and Friday test. Math and Math Timed Tests: Both grades will have math-timed tests this year. They will all take them every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. 1st grade tests are different than 2nd grade tests. If you do not make it to Back to School Night to hear about how these tests are implemented, please contact me. See attached report cards for math expectations. Health: Our health education program is called "Hooked on Health" and was developed by Beach Cities Health District, and includes social and emotional health. We also have a parent led nutrition program. A parent will come and teach a nutrition lesson about 5 times a year. They also provide a food tasting at lunch about 5 times per year. Beach Cities provides this program also. Physical Education: We are involved in a program called "Moving Children" where a PE specialist provides lessons every Thursday throughout the school year. I also provide 200 minutes of PE every 10-days as specified by California Sate Standards. State Standards and Report Cards: Please see the attached report cards to learn the state standards your child will be expected to know by the end of the year. Each standard is broken up into three trimesters. Your child has all year to Master each concept. A plus mark is very difficult to get as it means that your child has exceeded grade level expectations.
