Dear Parents:

As this school year comes to a close, the last few weeks get so hectic that we feel it is important to inform you of the upcoming events that will be taking place.  Many students get spring fever at this time of year and we really want to stress to you the importance of your child being here ready to learn.  Children can get so distracted by all the events that they often forget about their academics.  We want everyone to participate in the following events but feel that schoolwork does come first.

We will need parent volunteers for the Swimming Trip to Thermopolis.  Only three volunteers are needed for each class so please contact your child’s teacher if you would like to chaperone.  We will also need one parent volunteer for Field Day as well.  Again, please contact your child’s teacher if you would like to chaperone.

Here are the upcoming events:

MAP Testing window is from now until the end of May.  No specific dates have been set yet.

April 27:  No School for Students:  Professional Development Day
May 8:  ½ Day for Students-Professional
Development Day
May 13:  Science Fair Projects Due
May 15:  Science Fair in the Morning
May 19:  5th Grade Track Meet
May 22:  Visit to the Middle School 9:45-11:30
May 22:  ½ Day for Students-Teacher Work Day
May 26:  Move up Day 2:00-2:45
May 27:  Thermopolis Swimming Trip
May 28:  Field Day-Afternoon only:  Parent Volunteer needed for each class
May 29:  ½ Day-Last Day of School

We look forward to the upcoming weeks of learning and fun for all.  Thanks for all of your support this school year.  If you would like to chaperone please call 587-4279 or send a note with your child.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Jill DuFloth
Mr. Jez Krubeck
Mr. Jay McCarten

Just a reminder that our next Celebration will be held on Friday, March 6, at 1:30pm.  The theme is "Sunset's All-Stars" and since it is a sporty event, we will be having the kids cheer and holler for each class. Hope to see you there.

Dear 5th Grade Parents:

We are writing you to inform you of the grading scale used in 5th grade as compared to the one used on PowerSchool.  The one used on PowerSchool reflects percentages and rubric scoring used at the high school, not those used at the elementary level.  We informed parents at Parent Teacher Conferences of this discrepancy but feel it is important to communicate it again.  This is the percentage and rubric scale used in 5th grade:
95-100%    4    Advanced    Performing above grade level
80-94%        3    Proficient    Performing at grade level
60-79%        2    Basic        Performing at grade level part of the time
59% & lower    1    Novice    Performing below grade level

The percentage you see on PowerSchool is accurate and that is the one we used to determine final grades.  The rubric score on PowerSchool is inaccurate and that is why we felt it necessary to communicate this information to you again.  The percentage score your child has was placed into the scale above to determine their grade in each class.  Some of the classes such as math and social studies have sections delineated and those scores were taken from that concept and placed into the scale above to determine that delineated grade as well, i.e. Number Concepts & Operations and Algebra, Government, and American History.

If you have any questions feel free to contact us at 587-4279.

Dear Parents,

Hi, my name is Milli Stamness, and I am a student teacher from Montana State University-Billings. For the next fourteen weeks, I will be observing Mr. Krubeck and gradually assuming his teaching responsibilities.

I am very excited to have this opportunity to work with your child. As a former Sunset student, I am happy to return to my roots. I had the best time as a student and hope that I can help your students believe Sunset is the best school.

If you have any questions or concerns, email is the best way to reach me. My email address is mstamness@park6.k12.wy.us

Thanks,
Milli Stamness

Re:  Taxation

One of the main topics studied in social studies this year is the Revolutionary War.  A major focus is the causes of the war.  One of those causes is “taxation without representation.”  In the past, and this year as well, we have instituted a taxation policy to help kids understand the value of money and the feelings of the colonists, but more importantly, to properly prepare for their school day and classes.

The following is how this taxation plan works.  Each week every student will be given $5.  It is the bill with Mrs. DuFloth’s mugshot on it.  Throughout each week the teachers will decide some foolish tax that makes very little sense to the students, i.e. “If you are wearing white socks today, you owe $1.”  The $1 has Mr. McCarten’s mug on it.  This will give the students an idea of how the colonists felt about the taxes they believed were unjust.  This is the fun part of our process.  Students will learn to save and trade in money for larger bills.  Mr. Krubeck’s mug is on the $10.

Now comes the important part.  Students are coming to school and classes unprepared.  Examples include incomplete assignments and not bringing appropriate materials to class, like pencils and textbooks.  They will be taxed $1 for not completing assignments and for not being prepared for class.

We also tax for behavior infractions as well.  The more severe the infraction is, the greater the tax will be.  How does this show them the value of real money you may ask? When we have fun activities planned, the students will have to buy a ticket to attend the activity.  For example, students will have to use their money to buy a ticket to go on any field trip, to field day, the track meet and the swimming day in Thermopolis at the end of the year.  We try to have a fun activity every two months as an incentive to work toward.  If they have the funds to attend and all of their work is completed, they can, if not, they use that time to catch up on missing or late assignments.  Another aspect to help them understand the taxation policies of long ago is if a student does not have the money to pay a tax they are sent to prison (they lose a recess).  They still have to pay the tax plus interest when they get paid the following week. This will again help them follow the Boys Town Social Skills, The Six Pillars of Character, and keep them thinking about being prepared for class.

We are proactively trying to prepare students for middle school by using this taxation process.  It is a fun way to encourage the types of behaviors that will make each student successful.

Thanks for your help in supporting your child the second half of they year.  We appreciate all you do for your child.

Mrs. DuFloth, Mr. Krubeck, & Mr. McCarten

12/7/08 Movie/Pjama day.  Student council is sponsoring pajama day and the movie "Polar Express." The movie will begin at 1pm in the gym.  Students are allowed to bring one blanket and/or stuffed animal for the movie, BUT the stuff they bring must fit into the student's backpack.  Should be a lot of fun!
Thanks!

News from the office
Fifth grade students participate in the Meals on Wheels program throughout the schoolyear.  Every Monday, one student from each fifth grade class, goes with either Mrs. Farmer, Mrs. Scott, Mrs. Stahl, or Mr. Cowger to 5-10 homebound seniors through the Senior Center meal program.  All 5th graders will participate throughout the year.  Jerry Banks at McDonald's provides lunch for those who help deliver meals.
