Michael F. Stokes PTA PARP
Reading Program 2012

PARP kickoff went well - bookmarks were handed out to all the children as they came into school and our book mascots Page & Read were present.
The children are earning raffle tickets in class that will be entered into drawings for prizes. They can also earn raffle tickets by visiting the Public Library where there is a scavenger hunt going on until Friday, February 10th.
Book Swap & Book Bingo had a great turnout and all the children went home with books and prizes from bingo.
We had a 2 sessions of a laser light show today and the teachers and children really seemed to enjoy it.
Thursday is "read my shirt day" - the children are encouraged to wear a shirt with words on it for everyone to read and they can enjoy reading their friends' shirts also (flyer will be sent home tomorrow as reminder).
Minutes were counted last Friday and they are posted in the hallway outside the GPR.  Minutes will be counted again this Friday and winning classes will be announced at the closing assembly (date to be determined by Mrs. Ryan)..

Reading is a very important part of your child’s education. On Monday, January 30th we will begin our        “Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) program.  The program will   run through February 10th.  This year our

theme is Reading is Out of this World!

The goal of the program is to have your child read with a family member each night.  Your child will develop good reading habits and a love for reading.  A minimum of twenty minutes of shared reading every day should be an enjoyable and memorable experience.  During the 2-week program, school activities and incentives have been planned to encourage reading.  Each grade will compete with their peers. The winning classrooms will be rewarded for the most minutes read, so make sure you send in the booklet with recorded minutes on Friday, February 3rd to be counted. Last year our program inspired children of all grade levels to read more than their required minutes.

In this booklet you will find some useful information including a reading contract and weekly time sheets as well as a calendar of events.

Please sign the contract and have your child sign it also. Return the booklet with the signed contract and minutes log to your child’s teacher by February 3rd.

Your child is to read with you or a family member 20 minutes or more each night. Your child should submit the booklet on
Friday, February 3rd indicating the number of minutes he/she read each night that week and again on the following Friday, February 10th. Parents should sign the logs. Return the whole booklet. The booklet will be returned to your child that day. I know you will enjoy this wonderful reading experience with your child.
