Web Design Help

I decided to compose this page in hopes it might be helpful. Never taking a web design course myself, I will try to share what knowledge I have gained through trial and error and from many other teachers who have web sites and who have helped me.

I have actually started a new Web site service. TS Web Designs. If you don't have the time to spend on building a web site, I would love to create one for you.

I specialize in creating affordable, professional web designs that will  promote your small business with simplicity and style. My focus is on a creative, tasteful approach to web design that will enhance your company's visibility on the internet .

Web Design is not just my job it’s my passion. I am a teacher by day and web designer by night, If you are a small business,  non profit organization, a teacher, who would like a classroom website, or anyone who is interested in a personal web site, I feel confident together we can design a great website for you.

A Good Starting Point?

I use School World. They offer a Free 30 day trial. Make sure you enter my ID# (18470) and we can each add an extra free month on our account. I love their resources (page design templates, easy cut and paste ability from work documents, word searches, picture puzzles, online quizzes, message boards, blog and more!) My Teacher Pages from School World.com provides options for building a web site without having to know HTML.

How do I get started with more elaborate pages?

I played around with HTML using the copy and paste method. I would create my text with fonts, colors, and desired format in Microsoft Word and then save it on the desktop as 'html' or 'web page' with the 'Save As' function. Next, I would open the web document on the desktop and view the source by going to 'View' and scrolling down to choose 'Source'. Finally, I would copy and paste the HTML code onto my web page 'composing' space.

The site below is about learning HTML. It's designed for kids, but any beginner would find it informative.

Here is another site for beginners.

Where do you find your resources and graphics?

I find many super web site links on other teachers' web sites.  Here is the Golden Apple Top Site List http://goldenapple.top-site-list.com/  with outstanding classroom websites full of ideas and resources.

Also, http://www.google.com can locate web sites suitable for links when a focused topic search is conducted. All links need to be carefully checked out, of course.

Below is a list of the graphics sites I use most:

Structuring the Classroom Web site

Before you begin, you should plan the structure of your classroom Web site. You might map out the main pages and secondary pages. A classroom Web site should include at least the following pages:

1. Home Page

The home page needs a title, perhaps setting forward some metaphor or theme that will be repeated in the rest of the site. Your home page should include your name (with a working e-mail link), perhaps an appropriate picture of yourself, and other attractive photographic or visual elements.

Your home page also provides links to the other main pages in yours site, including those for students, parents, teachers, your professional portfolio, your teaching philosophy, and any personal information. To achieve this, you should create a navigation bar, place in a consistent location on every page.

2. Student Page

On this page you may want to add links for your students, student work or writing you have done.  You can include "handouts" or resources for classes you teach, grading information, expectations, rubrics, etc.

3. Parent Page

Again, your parent page might link to your teaching philosophy, allow you to post student work, provide links of interest to parents and other sites you think parents would find important.

4. Teacher Page

On this page for teachers and colleagues you can post links to lesson plans you have created, teaching ideas from professional journals and from the Web, links to professional teacher organizations, and other links, resources, or materials that might interest teachers or colleagues.

Children should always be supervised when using the internet. The intention of this site is to provide family friendly, appropriate, and informative links. The safety of our children is a top priority. Report any link of concern immediately. Any ads, pop-ups, or inappropriate links that may appear on this site are not endorsed by Ms. Steen or by Kannapolis City Schools.
