Gregor the Overlander and the Code of Claw by Suzanne Collins

Reviewed by: Libby K

A gruesome prophecy predicts Gregor’s death. “That’s why everyone was trying to keep me from reading this prophecy.” Gregor thought as he sits in the prophecy room. He hopes that his family will not find out, it was for the good of the underland. He would make it his business to kill the evil Bane, whom he had saved when he was a little rat pup even though he was supposed to kill him then, he wished he did, for the sake of all those mice and their babies. If it killed him he would kill the Bane, the rat was taller than all the others and much more powerful, even with his rager side in full swing the Bane would be able to kill him, and he will. Will Gregor survive? Or shall he fall to the Bane’s great power and become his weapon? Or maybe he will make it out alive, not a traitor.

I absolutely loved this book! It’s the fifth in the series, and the very last.  I cried at the end, all of the seventeen times I read it. There is some romance between Luxa and Gregor, finally! This book takes you in to a fantasy world where cockroaches are 3 feet tall, rats around seven! And all those other creepy crawlies are super sized too! And they all have a form of language, some use English some use their own language. Suzanne Collins is also a children’s television writer.

I would highly recommend this book to all and any of my friends. It is suspenseful and you just can’t put it down! This is the fifth book, and I would recommend you read the first books first because then you’ll understand what is going on and the situation. But out of the series this is my favorite. Two thumbs way up on this book!

Hardy Boys Thrill Ride by Franklin Dixon

Reviewed by: Heather Z

Do you like mysteries?  Well if you do, this is a great book for you!  Joe and Frank Hardy are a team together that solves teenage crimes.  They have been assigned a mission of discovering who or what killed Maggie Soto at Uncle Bernie’s Fun Park in Holyoke, Massachusetts.  The rides at the park are going out of control!  A cart on the Ferris wheel is missing a door, the Carousel is spinning way too fast, and at the water park across the street, a water slide has been flooded.  The boys narrow the suspects to the top three: Big Jim; a vendor that seems to hate Uncle Bernie, Uncle Bernie; the owner who will do anything to keep the amusement park in business, and Little Bernie; Uncle Bernie’s son who doesn’t want to take over the job of being the owner of the park when his dad retires.  Frank and Joe find themselves in a dark place that they think is a haunted house.  Someone knocks them unconscious and locks them in a scary dungeon and tied their hands to chairs as a punishment.  One of the boys frantically tries to get a pocket knife out of their pocket and cuts the rope so they can get untangled.  Someone’s footsteps are loud and noticeable and next thing you know the “zombie” grabs a knife that seems to come out of nowhere and tries to kill Joe and Frank.  Joe blinds the “zombie” and what happens next? Read the book to find out!

This book has a lot of “cliff hangers” or parts when you feel you need to read more and more of the book.  When you read this book you will never want to put it down!  I thought this book was excellent because at the end of each chapter there was a point where you really just had to go and find out what happens next.  This book taught me what to do in case of an emergency at an amusement park.  Out of the ordinary things though!

I recommend this book for readers who love thrill and excitement.  Also to people who love amusement parks and water parks.  I would not recommend this book for readers who are scared of amusement parks and want to get over there fears.  There is a whole Hardy Boys series, but they have no influence on each other.  In other words, you can read them in any order that you like.

Harris and Me by Gary Paulson

The book Harris and Me is about a kid who has parents who are alcoholics and he has to live with other people in his family because his parents could hurt him in a serious way. So he moves to a farm.  For example wrestling with pigs calling them “comie Japs”,and middle of nowhere with his cousin, Harris, who does a lot of crazy giving away greeting presents like blown up frogs, and  taking and swing from the barn to a tree like George of the jungle.

This is the funniest book I have ever read I’ve read in my life. It would probably be your favorite to. When I read this I started to laugh out loud and it disturbed everyone around me. This taught me that even on a farm with no T.V. or electronic games, you can still have fun.

I liked this book and strongly recommend it. If you love comedy this is the book for you. This is a good book to fall asleep to and you’ll just want to read more. This is also a good summer reading book if you find it on your summer reading list.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling

Reviewed by: Celena L

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was written by J. K. Rowling, about the heroic and brave Harry Potter.  It is a dramatic, fantasy book with many interesting and make-believe characters.  Though it is technically a fantasy story, the sixth Harry Potter book is often classified as a fictional book, as well.  Personally, I think that this is the best book ever, but I will tell you the summary of it so you can decide yourself.  Harry Potter is a 16 year-old boy who lives in two very different worlds.  Aside from being an orphan living with his cruel aunt and uncle, Harry is a wizard who attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.  Though he has lots of friends, including his two best friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, not everyone is on his side when it may seem he needs them most.  When headmaster of Hogwarts, Mr. Albus Dumbledore says that Harry has to use a very life risking scheme to destroy the all time greatest dark wizard, Harry uses every bit of will power he has to make sure he succeeds at finally killing Voldemort (dark wizard) forever.  The book Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was published in New York, New York by Scholastic in 2005.

Every time I finished reading the Harry Potter series, I could not wait to read the next book.  As you read, enjoy what I did about the scary and stimulating adventures of Harry as he faces horcruxes, spells, and the possibility of death lurking around every corner.  I find that the Harry Potter books in general change my life in the best possible way and I love them.  The author’s purpose for writing the story was to entertain and she has succeeded, at least for me.  Her theme was ‘the battle between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort that lasts years on end’.  This is mostly what keeps the story alive and what makes you want to keep reading until the end.  I have no doubt you will like this book as much as I did, but read the book and wait and see!

I would most certainly recommend this book to anyone between the mature ages of 7 and 110 to read this book because though it is very fun and interesting, there are difficult words and phrases to understand if you are not the best at comprehension.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is a book about a 13 year old boy named Harry Potter. When Harry was only about a year old, a powerful wizard named Voldemort killed Harry’s parents, but, Voldemort didn’t kill Harry. Something that night made Voldemort not kill Harry. No body in the wizarding world doesn’t know why he didn’t kill Harry. That’s how the 13 year old became famous.           Now 13 years later, his aunt Marge comes over to his house for a week with the Dersleys. An hour before Marge comes to his house; Harry asks his uncle Vernon if he could sign a permission slip to the village of Hogs Meade. “Only if your good”, says uncle Vernon.           A week goes by and finally after a week of fury, Harry lets out his anger by blowing Aunt Marge up! Now Harry is afraid that he’ll get expelled from Hogwarts. He goes to his room and gets his things for Hogwarts and goes to the Knight Bus stop and waits. When Harry gets to the Leaky Cauldron, Cornelius Fudge (the Minister of Magic) greets him. Tom, the landlord brings Harry’s things to his room.          About week later, Harry gets his new school books and the next day he sees Ron and Hermione. When Harry gets to school, he’s on the verge of grave danger.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is a really good book and should be read by other advanced readers. This book gives a lot of detail and action. I personally think that this is the best book ever! Read the book and you’ll want to keep reading the books!

Hatchet by Gary Paulson

The book Hatchet was basically about a 13 year old boy who got stuck in the woods.  The basic troubles he encountered were facing harsh weather, dealing with rough animals, and lack of food. However in my

However in my personal opinion the book was good but a little too violent at some times. Not that it was a bad thing.   Just that I thought they could at least not put as much emphasis on the violence.   Add a little more adventure! Throughout the book you may also be treated to some awesome animal parts which you can automatically picture the stuff going on. Now I’m not saying that Hatchet was all that bad but the sequence of events has changed a lot from the movie. However they made a new version of hatchet in 1990 called A CALL IN THE WILD which has even more stuff than the movie and the book Hatchet combined.

Now I’m not going to give a way the ending for all you people who haven’t read Hatchet but I’d give it a 8.5 thank you for reading my review.

In this book Hatchet there is a kid named Brian who is stranded on an Island, from a plane crash. This book is kind of scary because the main character, Brian, doesn’t know if he will get home. Brian has to find his own food and survive the wild with the hatchet his mom gave him.

I think this book is very interesting it teaches you how to survive the wild with only a few things. It made me fell kind of nervous that he wouldn’t get home. I do recommend it to other people it makes It feel like you actually in the book, with Brian trying to survive.

If you like man vs. wild you will have to read this selection.

Holes by Louis Sachar

The book Holes is all about a kid name Stanley Yelnats he was blamed for something he didn’t do and they put him in Camp Green Lake. Camp green lake is a place where boys dig holes in the hot sun every day. The hole has to be five feet deep and five feet in width. Stanley really should not be there he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was blamed for stealing shoes from a homeless shelter. He was walking home from school and the shoes fell from the bridge. He picked them up smelled them and started to run home. His dad was trying to find a way to make any shoes not smell before or after and they were used.

I do get what the authors theme of the book was and I do agree. The theme is that you didn’t do something but you get blame for it. The book is very interesting it talks about a boy who really doesn’t do anything but still gets blame for it. He didn’t know that when he walks home he will end up with all this trouble. But at the end it does work out he went home with something he found digging at camp green lake you have to read the book to find out what he found.

I would recommend this book to other people it’s a really good. And its show what can happen in one day

And that’s where she meets RAT, who basically turned into a rat. As she goes on she meets this boy named Boyed. He wants to find out how RAT transformed into a rat. As they go on they discover many things. Does Margaret find out how her father died or Boyed find out how rat transformed into a rat?

I really liked the book because it had a lot of suspense and a lot of comic strips. When I started the book I couldn’t really get the book but as I got to the middle of the book I couldn’t put the book down I wanted to read more and more.

I think you would like this book too.

Hunting the Hunter by Gordan Korman

The book Hunting the Hunter is a very good book if you like Hunting and if you like wars. Also you will like the book if you like to read about realalistic fiction. It is very fun when you get into it because it feels like you are there at the whole thing like you are watching it from a tree. It is also about a boy and his sister and trying to prove his parents that he did it and not another boy. If you want to read this book you should read all of the other six books because it relates to all of the other books.

The book takes place during War World II. If you like to read long books this a book for you to read because it has over 200 pages. This book is by an author that has won more then four awards about all the books she has written. The book is very scary so if you don’t like scary books then you shouldn’t read this book. I agree with the author’s message because it tells you a lot about wars. When I picked up the book I could not put it down because I got attracted to the theme. I was so surprised when I read the book because the author Gordon Korman didn’t make anymore books that follow along with the sequences.

If you like the first book then you should get the whole set of the books. I got the whole set of the books because I like them so much. The author is a great author because he likes to tell you about the big story in the middle of the book so if you want to find out what is going to happen then I suggest you should wait until the middle of the book. I will suggest you should read this book because it is a great book and all of the other books too.
