Team 6B Book Reviews by TitleD-E-FDear Mr. Henshaw by Reviewed by: Gabriella S The book is about Leigh who wrote letters to this famous author named Mr.Henshaw. Leigh loved his books and read some of them. Leigh’s parents divorced and Leigh was never with his dad. Leigh’s dad travels around the world. Leigh lives in a small house with his mom. Leigh and his parents found a dog and Leigh’s dad stayed with the dog and when he sees his father he sees the dog. This book reminds me of what happened to my mom. But my mom’s dad died. It is the same except my mom did not get to see her dad anymore. It is kind of sad because it is bad for them. It reminds me that I never got to meet my grandfather The author theme is good. It explains what happens to a kid that loses his parents, or the parents get divorce. I do agree with it in away. It just makes sense to me. Reviewed by: I recommend this book because the author uses a bunch of different emotions, such as fear, and sadness. I agreed with the author because I believe in friendship and companionship. The author is a person who has written 7 Newbery award winning books. Disappearance by Jude Watson Reviewed by: Rachel W This book is about a girl named Gracie who never new her father. After her mother dies he is back with dark secrets. His and Gracie’s history is mysteriously tied to a disappearance of a student many years ago and leads to a recent death of a man. It’s Gracie and her friends job to find the killer, and they are doing this to either live or be killed by the murderer. I find this book really interesting and scary because you never know what will happen next in the book. It’s also so exciting to find out what the characters will do next to solve the mystery. The theme of the book is to never kill anyone just because they didn’t love you anymore and I agree with the authors theme because if you really love something you will let it go and start a new life but, if you don’t agree you just might spend your life in jail and never have a family. This book meant so much to me because I am a person who loves mysteries because I always like to see if I can figure out the conclusion before the characters solve it. I recommend this book for people that love mysteries, but the age level would be 11 and up because of the hard language. If this book sounds great then go to a book store and beg you mother to by you Disappearance by: Jude Watson it’s only $4.99 and trust me you will really feel like a detective or as I call it gumshoe. Eldest by Christopher Paolini Reviewed by: Kirs R Eldest is the second book in the Inheritance Cycle. This is a good book for fans of fantasy. In this book Eragon goes to train in the Elvin city Du- Weldenvarden. His cousin Roran goes back to Carvahall to find Eragon. The Ra’zac come back because they think Roran has information on Eragon. Roran travels to Teirm and then to Surda with the whole village of Carvahall. In the Elvin city Eragon is learning a lot of new magic. He goes to Surda where Ajihad’s daughter Nasuada is commanding the army in the war. Eragon does battle with an unknown rider on a red Dragon. I liked this book because it was very suspenseful; also, because I like fantasy and magic. I agree with the authors about forgiveness and pride. I would recommend this book for advanced readers 13-15. Eldest by Christopher Paolini Reviewed by: Mitchum H Would you like to fly dragons and fight deadly urgals? Then join Eragon and Saphira on their quest to defeat the evildoers and save Alagaesia. They have now just become honorary members of the Varden, a group of freedom fighters. Now he is off to his training with the elves. Accompanying him is Orik, Arya and have course Saphira. Upon reaching Elesmera, the wonderous city of the elves, Eragon meets two people who will train him and Saphira in the ways of the Dragon Riders. In her excitement Saphira quickly offends Glaedr. Eragon quickly grows tired of Oromis’ slow teachings and asks Oromis to teach him powerful graymre or magic. Oromis becomes quite angered and starts to teach him the stronger magic, but it pains Eragon and Oromis too much [see Eragon for further details], so they go back to the basics of graymre [magic’s proper name]. At the Blood Oath celebration all is right again for Eragon. This book had a life changing effect for me personally. It has changed my diet and how I prepare food. This is my personal favorite book that I have read this year .I loved it! Eragon by Christopher Paolini Reviewed by: Tyler V Eragon is a young farmer that is poor and barely making enough to support his uncle and two brothers he was abandoned as a child. His brothers work on the farm with his uncle. On day hunting Eragon, the main character, found a strange blue rock after accidentally venturing off into the cursed forest, the Spine. When Eragon tries to sell the rock and they find out it was from the Spine, they wouldn’t accept it. After days of trying to sell it, it starts to rock back and forth. Eventually it is shaking violently and breaks the shelf it was on. Eragon woke up when it starts shaking. Eventually it cracks and a weak dog looking thing pops out. When Eragon tries to touch it the thing touches its nose to Eragons hand immediately his hand has a blue marking on it. I wish I could tell you more but you are just going to have to read it, sorry. Eragon is a very long book that should be read by people that have good reading comprehension. This book also gives you vivid images of many things. If anything the book would leave you in suspense. You probably couldn’t wait to read the next book when you finish the first book. I enjoyed reading this book. There are three books in this series, maybe more. Fever by Laurie Anderson Reviewed by: Erica L The book Fever 1793 is about a girl, Matilda, who is 14 years old and is living in a town with Yellow Fever. Her mother becomes very sick with this disease, so she and her grandfather are forced to move to a different town just until the disease passes. On their way to the town some doctors inspect them to see if they are sick. Turns out that grandfather has a summer grippe and they are again forced to go back to Philadelphia. They decide to travel by foot, but on the way back Matilda comes down with the fever and is taken to a sick house to recover. There she recovers and they are back on the road. When they get to Philadelphia the y discover that mostly everyone is gone, even mom. When they get to the house they see that it has been ransacked by robbers. Later that night the robbers come and try to kill Matilda and grandfather. One robber beats grandfather, so Matilda takes her grandfather’s sword and slices the robber. They run away and never come back when Matilda goes to look at her grandfather she just sees his limp body breathless on the floor. At the end Matilda runs the coffee shop. Everyone comes to check it out and they see what a wonderful job she did. Matilda is very pleased also with her accomplishment. This book is very interesting because it made me think I was really there in the book following them Flags of our Fathers by James Bradley Reviewed by: Matthew B The book Flags of our Fathers is a wonderful book. Flags of our Fathers, takes place in World War II. It’s about one of the most brutal, and violent battles of World War II. This story takes place on the island of Iwo Jima and the Americans are fighting the Japanese. During the first few chapters of the book it introduces the 6 people that raise the American flag on top of the island Iwo Jima. After, the next few chapters are parts where it gets to the war and action parts of the story. This book is a fantastic book. It has a good thrilling storyline and many facts on this war. I thought that this book was the greatest book ever written. This book also has some comedy and a tiny bit of drama in it but other than that it’s a awesome book. I recommend this book to all of you loopy-crazy war fanatics that love militarial stuff. Flush by Carl Hiaasen Reviewed by: Caroline D A book that was very good in my opinion was Flush. It was published in 2005. It is by the author who wrote the award-winning book, Hoot. It is about a boy named Noah Underwood who lived in the Florida Keys with his mom, sister, and dad. His dad was a man who liked to protect the environment, but always seemed to end up in the same place-- jail. This time he got into jail, he sunk a huge casino boat. Noah visited him while he was in jail, and Dad told him why he sunk the boat: Dusty, the owner of the casino boat, was dumping waste from the toilets into the waters at Thunder Beach. Dad told Noah about a guy who used to work on the casino boat. His name was Lice Peeking (well, his nickname was Lice; you can tell why). Lice was a man who only did work if he got paid. So, Noah said he would give Lice his family’s boat that was worth $12,000 if he would pick it up the next morning but he didn’t come! Noah investigates around town to see where Lice went, but he ends up going to Lice’s house and asking Shelly, Lice’s girlfriend, where he went. Shelly said she didn’t know where Lice was, but she wanted to help Noah prove that Dusty really was dumping into the ocean, but sooner or later, some twists and turns manage to convince Shelly, Noah, and Noah’s sister Abbey into thinking Dusty is really dumping the waste where it belongs! But is he? This book, to me, really showed that we should take care of our environment. The part that was strongest to me was when Shelly, Noah, and Abbey went to Thunder Beach and they saw a sea turtle swimming in the contaminated water, and Noah goes in the disgusting sea and shoos the turtle into the clean area. It really showed that animals are living in this waste and that humans are killing their homes. It was a funny book, but at times, it was very, very exciting! I fully agree with the author’s message to be kind to the environment. I strongly recommend this book! People who especially like realistic fiction books and suspenseful ill enjoy reading this story with many surprises and turns. I think it great for all ages and there isn’t a lot of difficult vocabulary that people might not understand. Flush is a very good story, and it has a plot that is easy to follow. Forbidden Doors by Bill Myers Reviewed by: Kelsey B I recommend this book because it grabs you right from the beginning. It has a series of the Forbidden Doors. This book is about a little Mexican girl (daughter of maid) who was shot by a very wealthy guy; owner of the mansion. Ever since then her spirit did not R.I.P, and this lady aka ascension lady goes to a group of Christian teens to help the Mexican girl’s spirit until they find out she not a spirit, shes a demon!!! The Forbidden doors are a scary, sad, interesting book that will make you go crazy!!! The author (Bill Myers) tells you about his series on the Forbidden Doors. My comment on this book is that anyone of 5th grade and up would understand and really get into the book and not want to put it down until they finished the book. My suggestion is that it has a very good meaning to it, and it is very fascinating and has a lot of excitement and action in this book. In the middle is the best because there are a lot of moods theirs scared, excitement, fierce, and sickness.
