Language Arts News and Information

Your child will be bringing home their hardback readers on Tuesday nights. Your child should be able to read the story with ease. You should have them read to you two or three times. Have them work on reading smoothly. Please sign the sheet of paper next to the story that they read and return the paper to school the following day. They may also bring home a Decodable Book or another small reader. Please have your child read the story to you aloud two or three times. Then sign the sheet of paper next to the story that they read and return the book and paper to school the following day.

There will be ten spelling words in your child's planner on Monday night. Please study these words nightly and make sure they can spell them by Friday. We will have a spelling test every Friday during Language Arts time. There will also be new vocabulary words next to the spelling words in the planner. The students DO NOT have to know how to spell the vocabulary words. They just need to look at the word and be able to read the word to you.

I left all of the vocabulary words on my website that we will be learning throughout the year. For each story, there is a list of vocab words (Units 1 through 5) that the students are required to learn in order to read the story. I have broken the list down by the stories that we will be reading. Every time we get a new reader (there are five of them), we will move onto the next Unit's vocabulary words. If you would like to work ahead and make flash cards for the words in the upcoming weeks, that would be fine. Just make sure that your child isn't overwhelmed.

If there is anything that you need from me, please let me know. If you ever have a question about something, please contact me. I'm so excited to begin our year together!
