"Christ has no body on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which Christ's compassion for the world is to look out; yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good; and yours are the hands with which he is to bless us now." -St. Teresa of Avila
Serving others is at the heart of soul of what we do at St. Mary's School. Students participate in all school Advent and Lent service projects, as well as multi-age Spirit Groups that often involve service projects.
Students also participate in service learning during academic class time. These service learning opportunities serve to enrich the material that students are learning in class. Students will need to perform 9 hours of service each quarter outside of core class time (religion, science, social studies, language arts) to receive full community service credit. Yes, this seems like a lot, but it is asking students to spend 1 hour/week or less than 2% of their non-school and non-sleep time each week serving others (definitely a number well within reach as we all try to become more Christ-like).
This year, students will need to make sure their hours come from at least two different service hour categories each quarter. The categories are: - ELC (Sweeping and cleaning, Auction, Carnival, etc.)
- School Service (non-ELC hour earning activities at school) (Video yearbook, Student Council, Liturgy Band & Choir, altar serving at SMS Masses, teacher assistance, etc.)
- Community (Food Shelf, nursing home, Clothesline, Salvation Army, etc.)
- Church (Weekend altar serving or choir participation, church cleaning, etc.)
- Family (Helping aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc- chores at home or work for parents doesn't qualilfy!)
Students earning more than 9 hours in a quarter will receive 5 extra credit points for each additional hour of service, up to 9 additional hours (45 points). Student Council members will organize monthly service events outside of school hours to help their classmates put their faith into action. Hours can be earned before, during, and after school hours both at SMS and at other locations. How do you earn service hours for religion class? Get involved in the committees and activities described below or click here to sign up for upcoming service projects. - any ELC hour earning activity
- Community Service– at our parishes, in our community, in our school, etc.
- SMS Student Council membership
- Liturgy Band & Choir– sing and play for the glory of God & Mrs. Kuklok
There will be a Service Hour Sheet that you will be given to log your hours on throughout the quarter. This form will also be used to describe your service activities and your thoughts and feelings about what you have experienced.
