USA Bio Olympiad USA Bio Olympiad

The Biology Olympiad program consists of an open multiple choice exam given in February, a semifinal exam consisting of multiple choice and free response questions given in March, and for the top semifinal 20 scorers nationally, a program in residence on a college campus during which lab skills are developed.  At the conclusion of this program, the top four students are selected for international competition.  This program assesses biology at a level beyond AP, so a great deal of independent preparation is required.  If you are up for it, start studying and let Dr. Fenstemaker know!  There is no charge for any phase of this program.

Campbell, 8th edition is the standard text reference.  The 6th edition that we use in AP Biology should be fine for at least the open exam.

Topics

Each of the seven topics is covered in each of the exams:
1. Animal anatomy and physiology: 25%
2. Cell Biology: 20%
3. Genetics and Evolution: 20%
4. Plant anatomy and physiology: 15%
5. Ecology: 10%
6. Ethology: 5%
7. Biosystematics: 5%

Check links under specific topics in my AP Biology Pages.

For anything relating to DNA and Genetics use the U of Utah Learn Genetics site.

For anything evolution-related use the Berkeley site.

Download recommended study materials from USABO below.  Many of these are pages of some notes and lots of links.  The two pdf's on plants will teach you pretty much everything you need on plants.

Good luck!
