Overview - Themes in Biology

Campbell Chapters 1, 25, 26, 28, 32, 33, 34

Lecture topics:
•    Overview of course – Relate the 8 major themes of biology to the themes outlined in Campbell Chapter 1
•    Discuss summer assignment – AP essay on domains of life

• identify the characteristics that distinguish living things
• how are organisms classified?
  

-  Read/discuss NY Times articles:

• “Putting Good Bacteria to Work” (probiotics)
• “This Can’t be Love: the Strange Case of Sexual Cannibalism” – what species do this?  Who benefits?  How might it be an adaptation?
  

Labs:

1. Biodiversity Survey - Drawing and Relating Structure to Function; – includes review of microscopic techniques!
2. Dichotomous Key Study – develop a dichotomous key for the chordates
