A New School Year

We have started a new school year, but the garden is at the height of its growing season. The dry weather lately has slowed things down a bit, but it still looks great out there. Children are starting to spend time in the garden, getting acquainted with the plot associated with their new grade level. It is also harvest time, and children are enjoying the fruits of their labor--literally!

The kitchen has been serving the yellow watermelon from our garden in the cafeteria during the first week of school. After some initial caution, it has been a resounding success. I love seeing the enthusiasm of the students when they know they are eating something that they helped grow. Other foods from our garden are showing up at lunch, too. All the basil that has been used so far this year has come from our garden, for example. Also, the lasagna that will be served on Monday, 8-25, will have sauce that is made almost entirely from ingredients from our garden. Yum!

VOLUNTEERS
We can always use volunteers. Parents and grandparents who want to connect with their children/grandchildren outside in a productive activity are always welcome. If you are interested in arranging a time to help your child/grandchild's class in the garden, contact the child's lead teacher directly or Kelly Stevenson (kstevenson@stfrancisschool.org). You can also check out the volunteer page at the tab on the left to see what needs done in the garden if you just want to help out on your own time.
