Week of February13th

Math- Multiplication, multiplication, multiplication! They need to be studying their facts.  There will be a chapter 10 test on Wednesday.

Lang. arts-  we are going to be learning about helping verbs and linking verbs.

science- The lesson this week will be on "solids, liquids, and gases"

reading and spelling-  the new story is called In my Family  Both tests will be on Friday morning.

Religion- we will be learning about how Jesus commissioned the Apostles to continue his work.  The chapter test will come home on Wednesday night.

Our Valentine's Day party will be held on Tuesday morning from 10  a.m. - 11:30. It is also a free dress day!

Friday is a 1/2 day.

Thank you to all who supported our food drive by sending in food donations.  The school as a whole brought in almost 8,000 items.  Over 1,500 of that was from our class alone.  Senora Ramirez's class brought in the most with a little over 1,800.  I am sure that the food pantry will be very happy with our efforts.  It couldn't be done without your support.  Thank you all again!

Week of February 7th

Math- we are dancing and singing to our "multiplication rock" tape in the mornings. The students need to be studying and memorizing their multiplication facts for 0,1,2, and 5.

Lang. arts- we are reviwing unit 3 on verbs. The unit test is on Thursday.

Reading and spelling- The new story is called The Terrible Eek.Both tests will be on Friday.

Science- I have stopped working on adaptations and have moved onto chapter 6 which is on "Observing Matter". 

Child Lures-  we are almost done with this program.  Please continue to discuss the matter with your child at home.

We have 582 food items at this point.  Thank you for all who have donated so far.  The food drive is still on so we will continue to try to beat The Caveman Crew!

Week of January 30th

Happy Catholic Schools' Week!

It is going to be a busy, yet fun week.  I sent the agenda home, but if you need another one just let me know.  Most importantly, Friday is Biography Day.  It begins at 12:30 and usually lasts at the most 1 hour.  If you need to have your child go in the beginning, please let me know.  I understand that some of you may not be able to stay for the entire hour. 

On Friday we have mass at 9:00, feel free to join us.

If is also a review week.  Therefore, there will not be a new story or spelling list.  There will be a 30 word vocabulary test and a 50 word spelling test on Friday.  The children have the packets in their folders.

The food drive has begun and it is already picking up steam around here!  It has become a competition to see which class can bring in the most food.  Senora Ramirez's class already has over 400.  We have around 200.  The competition is fun, but I keep reminding the children that it is for a good cause.

Throughout our busy agenda this week we will continue to work on multiplication facts, science, religion,  language arts, and child lures.

Week of January 23rd

PE uniforms tomorrow with bully shirt!

Math-.  Please be sure your child is working on multiplication facts every night. 

Lang. arts- we are going to be reviewing unit 3 on verbs shortly.  Also, we will be working on persuasive writing.

Reading and spelling-  The new story is AVery Cool Place to Visit.Both tests will be on Friday.

Science- we have begun chapter 3 on "Living Things and Their Ecosystems"

Religion- the chapter 11 test is coming home tonight, Monday, January 23rd.

Phonics- we have been working on short vowel sounds

child lures- be sure to follow up at night and ask your child what was discussed in class.

Week of January 17th

By now all students should have a book on the famous person they are doing a biography report on. Once again, Biography Day will be on Friday, February 3rd.

Child Lures- You have all received information regarding the child lures program.  I wanted to let you know that I willl begin talking about the different lures to the children tomorrow, January 18th.  Please encourage them to talk to you about what they are learning in order to reinforce the information.

Math- we are working on graphs and multiplication at the same time.  Please be sure your child is studying their multiplication table every night.

Lang. arts- we are continuing to work on verbs

Social studies- we will be reviewing the chapter on Mesa Verde and the test will be on Thursday.

Reading and spelling- The new story is called Pecos Bill.  Both tests will be on Friday.

Religion- We will be completing chapter 11 called "We Serve Others".

Writing- They have two pieces of writing up on the closet doores.  One is "If I were President I would..."  The other is " I was baking gingerbread cookies when one came to life."

Week of January 3rd

Welcome back!.

     I hope you all had a wonderful week together with your families.

This week in:

Math-  we will have the chapter 6 math test on Thursday.  We have been working on subtraction for quite a while now so they should be ready for the test.

Lang art- we have begun unit 3 on verbs.

Social Studies-  we are starting chapter 3 on "A Native American Community at Mesa Verde"

Reading and spelling- the story this week is called The Little Painter of Sabana Grande.  Both tests will be on Friday.

Religion- we are working on Chapter 9 called "Catholics are Open to All".  The open book test will probably be sent home on Thursday night.

Writing- Our creative writing this month is: " I was baking gingerbread cookies when one came to life"

reading comprehension- look for more reading comp. sheets to be coming home with grades on them.  I will be trying to focus on non -fiction passages.

Week of December 19th

Hi everyone,

     This week, as you know, will be a little hectic.  We will not be having a new reading story this week.  Therefore, there will not be a reading or spelling test.

     There will be a science test on Tuesday.

     We will be practicing for our Christmas concert on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. The concert is Wednesday night.  There will be a finale in which all grades are participating. Please be sure to pick up your child from the classroom when the show is over so that I can do a head count.

     Our classroom Christmas party will be on Thursday after mass.  There are no free dress passes allowed on Thursday due to mass.

     I look forward to seeing you at the concert. 

Week of December 12th

Math- The Chapter 5 make up test will be on Thursday.  We are moving onto chapter 6 which continues with subtraction.

Lang. arts- the Unit 2 test will be this Wednesday on nouns

Reading and spelling-  The new story is called Moses Goes to a Concert. Both tests will be on Friday.

Science- we are working on Lesson 3 called "From Parents to Young". By the end of the week we will be reviewing all of chapter 2 and the test will be on Monday. 

Phonics-we are still working on short vowel sounds

Writing- we will be writing Christmas letters to our pen pals and making them bookmarks.

It is concert time of year, therefore, we will be practicing for that this week and next week.  Our concert is on Wednesday, Decembber 21st.

Also, Santa's workshop is back! My class will be going shopping on Thursdsay, December 15th from 2:10-2:50.

Week of December 5th

This week is a review week.  Therefore, there will be a 50 word spelling test on Friday and a 30 word vocabulary test as well.

Math- we are practicing subtracting with regrouping.  The chapter test will be on Thursday.

Lang. arts- we are reviewing unit 2 on nouns.  The unit test will be next week sometime.

Science- we are slowly working our way through chapter 2 in our science books.  There is a lot of information. They are taking notes and putting vocabulary words into their journals.  I will let you know when it is time for the test.

Religion- look for the chapter 7 test to be coming home soon.

Social studies-  The children have been working on a state project in technology.  After reviewing their rough drafts, I have found that they need a lot more work. Therefore, I will have them correct them in technology, and possibly in library.  When I o.k. the packets, they will come home to be written neatly in a new packet and returned as a final draft to me.

Week of November 14th

Parent-teacher conferences are this Thursday.  I will be sending home a reminder with your appointment time on it.  I look forward to seeing all of you on Thursday!

This week:

math- there will be a chapter 4 math test this Wednesday.  It is on addition with regrouping and Venn Diagrams.

Lang. arts- we are working on possessive nouns as well as skills such as using the library.

Social Studies- we are coming to the end of our chapter on "Communities and Geography"  The test will probably be on Monday, November 21st.

Reading and spelling-  the new story is called Spiders at Work. Both tests will be on Friday.

Phonics- we are still working on short vowel sounds

Religion- we will be working on Chapter 6 which is called "We Celebrate Reconciliation and Healing"

Week of November 7th

I hope you all had a great weekend...the weather definitely cooperated!  Here is what is in store for us this week:

Math- The chapter math test will be on Wednesday.

Lang. arts- we are working on possessive nouns.

Social studies-  We have begun working on chapter 2 called "Our Country's Geography". They have to look up the vocabulary words in each lesson in the glossary and write the definitions in their journals.  This unit will tie in nicely with a tech project I am going to have them work on. Each student is going to complete a project on a state. This project will be done almost entirely in school with Mrs. McGuire's collaboration.  However, the final draft will be completed at home.

Reading and spellling- the story this week is called Dream Wolf.  Both tests will be on Thursday.

Religion-  we are going to work on chapter 5 which is called "Jesus Shows us How to Forgive and Heal" Look for the test to come home on Thursday.

Writing- we will  be doing creative writing for Thanksgiving.  We are also completing a letter to our pen pals.  I will begin focusing more on writing paragraphs and having them edit their own work.

Week of October 31st

Thank you to all the parents who helped to make our Halloween party such a success! We all had a great time.

For those of you who haven't heard, the food drive for the Sacred Heart Food Pantry will begin shortly.  Although, it has already begun in my class and Mr. Sullivan's class.  This is because it has become a competition to see who can bring in the most food for this great cause.  We have a lot of fun with it and the children can't help but to catch the fever. Again, we need to keep in mind that it is for a great cause.  Please help our class to be the most giving!

This week in :

 Math- we are continuing to add with regrouping. We are also estimating sums.  Therefore, those still struggling with rounding are going to have a hard time.  They need to continue to practice at home as well as in school.

Lang. arts- we are learning about singular and plural nouns, as well as common and proper nouns.

Science- we are reviewing chapter 1 and there will be a test on Thursday.  Look for the study guide that I have sent home to help them study.

reading and spelling- The new story is called The Sun, the Wind, and the Rain.  Both tests will be on Friday.

Religion- we are beginning chapter 4 called " Jesus Teaches us to Pray"

Phonics- still working on short vowel sounds

Writing- we will be writing to our pen pals.

Week of October 24th

Hi Everyone,

   It is going to be a short and crazy week!  We are starting off with a bullying assembly on Monday.  We will go to another one on Thursday.  On Wednesday we will have Pumpkin Day all day long.

     Although it will be a short and busy week, we will still be having a reading and spelling test on Thursday.

This week:

Math- we are moving on to chapter 3 which focuses on addition

Lang. arts- we will be working on nouns in this unit.

science- we are wrapping up the first chapter.  We will  be doing some review and I will let you know when the test will be.

Religion-  the chapter 3 test will be coming home on Monday.

phonics- we are working on short vowel sounds.

I will be working on putting grades on the computer so that you can have an accurate picture of where your child is.

Week of October 17th

This is our first review week! That means we have already completed 5 stories. This week we will be having many tests.  The vocabulary and the spelling words are words that should already be known.  However, they will need to review and study them all week. There will be a unit reading test that they cannot study for, it tests their comprehension.  There will also be a math and a language arts unit test.

3rd grade tradition is to celebrate Pumpkin Day in October.  Look for a letter of information to be coming home shortly.

There is a school mass this Thursday, October 20th at 9 a.m.  You are always welcome to join us!

Math- we are completing chapter 2 on rounding and ordering numbers.  The test will be on Thursday, October 20th.

Lang. arts-  we have completed unit 1 on sentences and the unit test will be on Wednesday, October 19th.

Science-  we are using the textbook to complete worksheets on lessons 3 and 4 on "Animals and their Parts" and "Classifying Animals"

Religion-  we are reading and discussing chapter 3 "We Show our Love for one Another"

Phonics- the short /e/ sound is being focused on this week.

Reading - there will be a 30 word vocab. test on Friday.  Also , there will be a comprehension test on Tuesday.

Spelling- there will be 50 word test on  Friday

Week Of October 11th

     I will begin after school help Next Wednesday, the 19th.  I am not able to start it this week.

Math-we are completing chapter 2 and will review and practice rounding.  The test will be next week.

Lang. arts-  we are going to review for the rest of this week.  The unit 1 test will be next week.

science- the students are taking notes and pasting vocabulary words into their journals. This week's lesson is on plants and their parts.

Reading and spelling- the new story is called Champions of the World.  Even though it is a short week, both tests will still be this Friday.

Writing- we will be writing a creative story with a Halloween theme.  They will be posted up in the classroom .

Religion- Look for the chapter 2 test to come home on Thursday.

***Reminder:  Please send in an art box for your child's art supplies.

Week of October 3rd

First and foremost, a reminder that Open House is on Thursday, October 6th.  I look forward to seeing all of you then!

Math-  the chapter 1 math make up test will be this Wednesday.  We are moving on in chapter 2. We are working on ordering numbers and we estimating.  Estimating is always a stumbling block, so I foresee a lot of time being spent on this subject.

Lang. arts- we will continue to practice subjects and predicates as we move into reviewing unit 1.

Reading and spelling-  The story this week is called Max Malone.  Both tests will be on Friday.

Social Studies- the Chapter 1 test is Tuesdayl, October 4th.  Prior to the test we will play "Wheel of Social Studies" as a review for the test.  If they know their vocabulary they won't have a problem with the test.

Science- We will beging science this week. The first lesson is on "Living things and their needs".  Science will be challenging at first.  There is a lot of material to absorb and they have to learn to use their textbooks to find answers. 

Religion- we will work on Chapter 2 this week which is called We Receive the Sacraments of Christian Initiation.

Writing- we will be doing a creative writing story that begins with " I took a ride in a hot air balloon and landed in ..."

We will also complete letters to our pen pals.

Week of September 26

Apple Day was a lot of fun.  We weighed, taste tested, ranked, and did a lot of eating! Thank you for all of your support in sending things in to make the day a success.

This week in:

math- The chapter 1 math test will be on Wednesday, September 28th.

Lang. arts- we continue to work on subjects and predicates, compound sentences and run-on sentences.

writing- your child wrote a bio poem, which is a poem about themselves.  The poem was then typed in technology class.  They will be on display at open house.

Social studies- we are coming to the end of chapter 1 on communities.  You will see the book come home with some assignments to help them review and prepare for the test.  The test will be next week some time.

reading and spelling-  Our story this week is OPT: An Illusionary Tale. The reading and spelling test will be on Friday.

Please send in an art box for your child.  It will make things much easier.   There is no school on Thursday.

The apple a day program has begun.  Your children participated in this last year.  It  is a program about keeping their bodies healthy by avoiding things such as drugs and alcohol. It also reinforces the importance of self-esteem.

Week of Sept. 19th

Math- we will be wrapping up chapter 1 on place value.  The Chapter 1 test will be on Thursday.

Lang. arts-  We will  be working on subjects and predicates

Reading and spelling-  our new story is called Phoebe and the Spelling Bee.  The reading and spelling tests will be on Friday.

Social Studies-  We have completed the introductory on learning to read different kinds of maps.  Now we will work on chapter 1  on Communities.

Writing- they will learn how to write a bio poem and type it up in technology class.

religion- we will complete chapter 1: "The Holy Spirit Guides us to Live as Christians"  When we complete the chapter there will be a take home open book test.

Week of Sept. 12th

Math- we are working on place value.  There will be homework in math every night

Lang. arts- We are reviewing sentences and sentence fragments.

Reading- Our reading story this week is called Grandfather's Journey.  The reading test will be on Friday.

Spelling-  The spelling list has been written in their planners.  The test will be on Friday.

writing-  we will be doing a writing piece with an under the sea theme for our closet doors.

religion-  we are writing a bible verse every morning and discussing it.  We have also begun chapter 1 in our religion books.

Social Studies-  They are using the glossary to look up vocabulary words and learning map and graph skills that will be useful throughout the year.

 

We are off to a good start!  Please send in an art box for your child to place his/her crayons, colored pencils etc..

Welcome back to school!

I will be updating this site weekly to let you know what curriculum is being covered and any tests that may be coming up.  I also try to remind you of any pertinent information going on in the school. 

 

Open house is late this year so I will be sending a letter home on Monday to let you know some of the weekly routine that you should expect.  Every Monday your child will have the new spelling list written in his/her planner and also new vocabulary words written in his/her reading journal.  The spelling test will be given every Friday and will include 15 core words and 5 bonus words worth 1 point a piece if spelled correctly.  The reading test will be given on Fridays also.  The test consists of comprehension questions and vocabulary questions. There are 10 all together. 

Please  put any correspondence to the office, including lunch money, in an enveloped labeled with your child's name, class, and who the envelope should go to.

I will follow up with a letter, but I wanted to at least give you a heads up!
