Week of March 8th

Math- the chapter 11 make up test will be on Wednesday, march 10th.  We are working on chapter 12, which is more multiplication.  Also, I am including geometry at the same time, which is chapter 23.

lang. arts- still working on verbs and creating writing assignments.

reading and spelling- the new story is called JJ's Big Day.  Both tests will be on Friday

Religion- reading and discussing chapter 8  which is called "We Pray to the Holy Spirit".

Science-  we are at the end of chapter 6 on "Observing Matter" .  We will be reviewing and the test will be on Thursday, March 11th.

***We have begun taking practice ELA tests to help prepare them for the real thing  which will be April 26th-April 28th.

***This Wednesday,, after school, I will be helping anyone who stays with science review and math.

Week of March 1st

Math- chapter 11 test will be on Thursday, March 4th.  We will continue with multiplication and I will be including geometry too.

Lang. arts- we are continuing our work on verbs

Writing- we have written another persuasive paragraph, and  a creative story for St. Patrick's Day.

Science- we are working on chapter 6 which is all about matter.

Reading and spelling- our new story is called Big Blue Whale.  Tests on Friday.

***I have offered my time on Wednesday afternoons from 3-4p.m. for the next 5 weeks for anyone who is need of extra help. 

 

Week of February 22nd

Math- we are working on Chapter 11 which includes square numbers and multiplication facts for the factors 6-9.

Lang. arts- we will be writing another persuasive paragraph, a creative writing story, and continuing to learn about verbs using helping verbs and linking verbs.

Science- we are working on chapter 6 which is on matter.

Reading and spelling- the new story is called Cactus Hotel.  Both tests will be on Friday.

Religion- we have completed chapter 7, look for the take home test this week.  We will be moving on to chapter 8 and focusing on Lent for the next few weeks.

 

Week of February 8th

Math- students need to continue to study multiplication tables. Chapter 10 math test will be on Wednesday, Feb. 10th.

Lang. arts- we are coming to the end of our review for unit 3. The unit test will be on Friday, February 12th.

Social studies- Chapter 3 test will be on Thursday, February 11th.

Reading and spelling-  The story is called In My Family.  Both tests will be on Friday, February 12th.

Valentine party is on Thursday, February 11th at 12:30 starting with a pizza party.  Please be sure to send in a snack on Thurday as they will be eating lunch later than usual.  Valentines are exchanged on that day as well.

Week of February 1st

Catholic Schools' week

I am sorry for the break in information... hopefully I am on track again.

If you think the homework has gotten heavier, you are not imagining it.  We are half way through the year and working our way towards 4th grade.  Therefore, they have to be prepared for the challenges that await them.  Homework should still not take more than 1 hour.

Math-  please be sure your child is studying the multiplication table every night.  The chapter 10 test will be next week.

lang arts- we are reviewing  verbs.  The unit test will be next week

Social studies-  we are at the end of the chapter about the Anasazi.  I will let you know when the test will be.

Reading and spelling-  The story is called The Terrible EEK.  Both tests will be on Friday.

Please refer to your Catholic Schools' Week agenda that was sent home to keep up to date with what we are doing each day.  The read-a-thon and math-a-thon are a daily occurrence.

Biography Day is Thursday at 12:30 , hope to see you all then.

Week of January 18th

Math- we are working on multiplication arrays and multiplication facts.  Please have your child study the multiplication table each night.  The tables must come back to school every day. Chapter 9 test will be given shortyly

Lang. arts- we are working on verbs, taking notes, and summarizing.

Social studies-  We are at the end of Chapter 2 on Communities and Geography.  The test will be on Thursday, January 21st.

Reading and spelling-  The story is called "A Very Cool Place to Visit"  .  Tests will be on Friday.

Phonics- working on short vowel sounds

Religion-  We are beginning Chapter 6 on Reconciliation.

 

 

Week of January 11th

Math- we have begun multiplication.  Please do not remove the multiplication table from their take home folders.  They are to study from them each night, but the table needs to come back to school every day.  Feel free to make  a copy of it for home if you would like.

Lang. arts- we are working on verb tenses.

Social studies-  we are coming to the end of chapter 2.  The unit test will be next week.

Reading and spelling-  The new story is called Pecos Bill.  It is a play and the kids had a lot of fun with it.  Both tests will be on Friday

Religion-  Chapter 5 open book test will be sent home, or possibly be done in class this week.

Friday is a half day and Monday is a day off in honor of  Martin Luther King, Jr.  We have been completing comprehension sheets  based on the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and we watched "My Friend Martin".

***Your child is being assigned a biography report.  They will be presented during Catholic Schools' Week.  You will all be invited.  Look for a letter with details to be coming home shortly.

Week of January 4th

Happy New Year!

Here's what to expect this week....

math- we are skipping around and covering time, calendars, graphs, and we will be starting multiplication.

lang. arts- we are working on verbs

phonics- short vowel sounds

reading and spelling- the new story is called The Patchwork Quilt.  Both tests will be on Friday.

writing- They will be writing what their favorite 3rd grade memory is so far.  This is to go along with the story this week.  Also, they will be writing what they dream of doing or being when they grown up. This is in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

Religion- We are beginnning chapter 5- "Jesus shows us how to Forgive and Heal".

We have our school Mass this Thursday, November 7th.

Week of December 14th

Hi everyone,

It's going to be a hectic week!  We are practicing for our Christmas concert, which will be held on Wednesday, December 16th at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center.  Please be sure to read the letter that Mr. Knack sent home regarding the fact that there will be a finale so no parent should pick up their child until the very end of the show.  At that time, please don't pluck them out of line.  For their safety, as well as others, allow them time to return to our classroom, where you can pick them up.

Math- we will be having the chapter 6 test on Wednesday, December 16th.  We have been practicing subtraction at great length in class so they should be ready.

Lang. arts - they took the unit 2 test today, Monday, December 14th.  We will begin unit 3 on verbs.

Reading and spelling-  Our new story is called The Little Painter of Sabana Grande. Both tests will be on Friday as usual.

Science- we are reviewing chapter 2 and the test will be on Monday, December 21st.

Week of December 7th

Math- we are working on subtracting across across zeros

Lang. arts- we are reviewing unit 2 on nouns.  The unit test will be on Monday, December 14th.

Science- we are at the end of chapter 2, we will be reviewing for the test which will be next week.

Writing- we have been doing a lot of creative writing for Christmas, as well as writing to our pen pals.

 

Week of November 30th

I am sorry for the delay in updating  my webpage.  This week is a REVIEW WEEK , therefore, there will be no new story or spelling list.  There will be a 50 word spelling test on Friday and a 30 word vocabulary test also.  The lists have been sent home to help in studying.

Math- They took their chapter 5 test on Tuesday, Dec. 1st.  We have been working on subtraction at great length in class and I felt they were ready for the test.  Most did awesome on it.  Those few who didn't, can retake the test on Friday.  We will now be working subtracting across zeros.

Lang. arts- we are reviewing unit 2 on nouns.  The unit test will be early next week.

Reading- They are going to take a reading unit test which consists of reading comprehension passages and a listening page.  This is not anything that they can study for.  I have been giving them reading comp. passages weekly to practice in this area.

Religion- they are continuing to write a bible verse down every morning and the meaning of it is discussed.  We are completing chapter 4 and a test will be coming home.

Week of November 23rd

Math- we are practicing our subtraction skills.  The chapter 4 test will be next Tuesday.

lang. arts- we are writing another how to paragraph.  We will begin reviewing unit 2 on nouns.

science- we are slowly working on taking notes for lesson 1.

Religion- we are working on chapter 4- Jesus teaches us to pray

phonics- identifying medial consonants

Reading and spelling- Our new story is Web Wonders. It is a short, TFK story so there WILL be a spelling test and reading test on Wednesday.

Animal reports are due this Wednesday, November 25th!!!

Our pajama drive is off to a slow start.. if you are able to participate we need the Pjs in by Nov. 30th.  Thank you.

Week of November 16th

Math- we are moving into subtraction so please be sure to have them practice their facts at home too.

Lang. arts- we will continue to practice plurals, possessives, and we will explore explanatory writing and write our own.

Science- I have decided to do another chapter in science, rather than go to social studies.  Therefore, we will be moving into chapter 2 which is called "Living things Grow and Change".

Reading and spelling- our new story is called Spiders at Work. Our tests will be on Friday.

Religion- Chapter 3 test is coming home. We will begin chapter 4.

Reminders

There is no school on Thursday, Nov. 19th due to report card conferences.  I have sent home reminder notices to help you.

We are having a pajama drive for our Christmas service project. They are due by Nov. 30th. If you go to the scholastic website it is interesting to read about the good that this drive does for the needy.

The animal projects are due Wed. Nov. 25th.  I was not able to get the 11 x 17 white construction paper that I had promised.  Our school has not ordered them.  I am sorry for the inconvenience this may cause you.

Week of November 9th

Math- the chapter 4 math test on adding  is Tuesday, November 10th.  We have practiced at great length on the board and at our seats. They should be ready for it! We will then begin chapter 4 on subraction.(oh boy!)

Lang. arts- We are practicing making our nouns plural and possessive.  They confuse the two processes.

Science- we are reviewing chapter 1.  The test will be on Thursday, November 12th

Reading and spelling-  our new story is called Dream Wolf.  Both tests will be on Friday.

Religion- look for the take home test later this week on chapter 3.

social studies- we will begin chapter 2 later this week which is called "Communities and Geography"

Every morning we start with a bible verse and now I am having them also do little proofreading paragraphs to give them practice at correcting work.

***No school November 11th to honor Veteran's Day.  Remember that the cereal box project is due on Thursday, November 12th.

Week of November 2nd

Math- we are working on chapter 4 on adding greater numbers.  The chapter 3 make up test is on Wednesday, November 4th.

Lang. arts- this unit involves possessive nouns which is a tough concept for the children.  Be sure to review with them at home.

Science- we will be reviewing chapter 1.  I will let you know when the test will be.

Reading and spelling-  The new story is called The Sun, the Wind, and the Rain.  Tests will be on Friday.

Writing- we will be writing our next creative writing piece for Thanksgiving.

Week of October 26th

Math- we have been practicing adding whole numbers, estimating the sum, and using patterns to do mental math.  The chapter 3 math test is on Wednesday, October 28th.

Lang. arts-  we are working on nouns- plural nouns, singular nouns, common, and proper. We have written how- to paragraphs.

Science-  The children take notes on every lesson we read.  These will come in useful as study guides for the test. We are working on workbook pages in class so that I can help guide them on how to use their books to find the answers.

Reading and spelling- The new story is City Green. Both tests are on Friday morning.

The cereal box book reports are due on November 12th.

Pumpkin Day is Wednesday, October 28th.  Thank you to all of you have haven sent items in to make our day successful!

Halloween festivities begin on Friday at 12:30.  Please don't come in prior to that because we are working the a.m. . thank you

Week of October 19th

This week is a review week, which means there will be no new reading or spelling words. There will be a 50 word spelling test on Friday.  These are words from previous lessons.  There will also be a 30 word matching vocabulary test on Friday.  These are the words they have learned already too. 

Math- working on addition properties and strategies in chapter 3

Lang. arts-  we are reviewing unit 1 and the unit 1 test will be on Wednesday, October 21st. Then we will be moving on with unit 2  which is all about nouns.

Science- we have begun working on chapter 1-"Looking at Living Things".  In science, I have the students take notes from the board.  This will work as a study guide for them. We will be working a lot in our science workbooks. 

Reading-  there will not be a new story, there will be a unit test that they cannot study for.  I have not picked the day that will be given yet.

Religion- The chapter 2 test will be coming home and we will move on to chapter 3.

Writing - we will work on explanatory writing this week.

 

Week of October 13th

Math- Chapter 2 math test will be on Thurs. Oct. 15th.

Lang. arts- we are reviewing unit 1.  The unit test will be early next week

Reading and spelling- the new story is called Champions of the World.  Both tests will be on Friday.

Social studies-  we will be reviewing chapter 1 on communities.  The test will be on Monday, 10/19.

Writing- we have worked on creative writing, personal narratives, and this week we will write letters to our prayer partners.  We will write to them throughout the year.

Religion-  Look for the chapter 2 test to come home soon.

Week of October 5th

Math- we will continue to work on rounding . The chapter 2 test will probably be on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

Lang. arts-  we are working on writing personal narratives. Also, we will begin reviewing unit 1 on sentences and subjects and predicates.  A unit test will be next week.

social studies- we will complete chapter 1 on communities and using map scales.  The map scales is a difficult concept for them to learn and there is one whole page of it on the chapter 1 test.  Therefore, we will practice using them as much as possible before the test.

reading and spelling-  The new story is Max Malone.  The words are a little more difficult this week. Please make sure they are reviewing their spelling list throughout the week.

religion-  I will be sending the chapter 1 test home any day.  Remember, you can guide them to find the right answer in the book.

***Pizza Hut Book It program will not be used this year. Therefore, I will come up with my own reward at the end of each month for 2 books read.

Apple Day was a success, the kids seemed to enjoy it.

Don't forget it is a half day on Friday and no school on Monday.

Week of September 28th

This Friday, October 2nd, we will be having Apple Day in our classroom for most of the day.  The children can wear their PE uniforms to be more comfortable.

math-  We are working on Chapter 2 which includes comparing numbers and estimating.

Lang. arts- we are continuing to review subject and predicate, as well as working on dictionary skills, and time-order words.

social studies- We are just beginning to read chapter 1 on communities.

reading and spelling-  the story this week is OPT: An Illusionary Tale.  The reading and spelling tests will be on Friday as usual.

religion-  we are completing chapter one on "The Holy Spirit guides us to live as Christians"  Look for the open book test to be coming home in the near future.

Week of September 21st

Congratulations....we all made it through our first full week!  The kids are adjusting nicely, I hope you are too.  This is what is happening this week...

Math-we are reviewing chapter 1 on place value, the chapter 1 test will be this Thursday, September 24th.

Lang. arts- this week we are focusing on subjects, predicates, combining sentences, and run-on sentences.  We also wrote our first paragraph for the year.

Social studies- We are going to complete our lessons on map skills and we should begin chapter 1 on Communities later in the week.

Spelling and Reading-  Our new reading story is called Phoebe and the Spelling Bee and the spelling list goes along with the story.  The reading and spelling tests will be on Friday.  Just a reminder, the vocabulary is part of the reading test and the words are written in their reading journals.

Week of September 14th

Math- we are working on place value and basic math facts.  We throw the math ball around every morning for math facts practice.  These facts need to be learned and memorized, which means they should be working  on them at home every night.

Lang. arts-  we are starting in unit one with types of sentences.

reading and spelling-  The first reading story is called Grandfather's Journey.  They have copied the vocabulary down in their journals.  The spelling list goes along with the story and the words are written in their planners.  Reading and spelling test will be on Friday.

*** In 3rd grade we do not have the children write their spelling words 3x each.  However, if your child struggles with spelling, it would be a good idea to have them do that exercise at home.

Social studies-  we are learning to use the glossary in the book to look up the meaning of the vocabulary words being used in the lesson.  Then they write the meanings down in their journals.  We are beginning with skills such as map reading.
