Week of November 2nd Math- we are working on chapter 4 on adding greater numbers. The chapter 3 make up test is on Wednesday, November 4th. Lang. arts- this unit involves possessive nouns which is a tough concept for the children. Be sure to review with them at home. Science- we will be reviewing chapter 1. I will let you know when the test will be. Reading and spelling- The new story is called The Sun, the Wind, and the Rain. Tests will be on Friday. Writing- we will be writing our next creative writing piece for Thanksgiving. Have a good week! Week of October 26th Math- we have been practicing adding whole numbers, estimating the sum, and using patterns to do mental math. The chapter 3 math test is on Wednesday, October 28th. Lang. arts- we are working on nouns- plural nouns, singular nouns, common, and proper. We have written how- to paragraphs. Science- The children take notes on every lesson we read. These will come in useful as study guides for the test. We are working on workbook pages in class so that I can help guide them on how to use their books to find the answers. Reading and spelling- The new story is City Green. Both tests are on Friday morning. The cereal box book reports are due on November 12th. Pumpkin Day is Wednesday, October 28th. Thank you to all of you have haven sent items in to make our day successful! Halloween festivities begin on Friday at 12:30. Please don't come in prior to that because we are working the a.m. . thank you Week of October 19th This week is a review week, which means there will be no new reading or spelling words. There will be a 50 word spelling test on Friday. These are words from previous lessons. There will also be a 30 word matching vocabulary test on Friday. These are the words they have learned already too. Math- working on addition properties and strategies in chapter 3 Lang. arts- we are reviewing unit 1 and the unit 1 test will be on Wednesday, October 21st. Then we will be moving on with unit 2 which is all about nouns. Science- we have begun working on chapter 1-"Looking at Living Things". In science, I have the students take notes from the board. This will work as a study guide for them. We will be working a lot in our science workbooks. Reading- there will not be a new story, there will be a unit test that they cannot study for. I have not picked the day that will be given yet. Religion- The chapter 2 test will be coming home and we will move on to chapter 3. Writing - we will work on explanatory writing this week. Week of October 13th Math- Chapter 2 math test will be on Thurs. Oct. 15th. Lang. arts- we are reviewing unit 1. The unit test will be early next week Reading and spelling- the new story is called Champions of the World. Both tests will be on Friday. Social studies- we will be reviewing chapter 1 on communities. The test will be on Monday, 10/19. Writing- we have worked on creative writing, personal narratives, and this week we will write letters to our prayer partners. We will write to them throughout the year. Religion- Look for the chapter 2 test to come home soon. Week of October 5th Math- we will continue to work on rounding . The chapter 2 test will probably be on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. Lang. arts- we are working on writing personal narratives. Also, we will begin reviewing unit 1 on sentences and subjects and predicates. A unit test will be next week. social studies- we will complete chapter 1 on communities and using map scales. The map scales is a difficult concept for them to learn and there is one whole page of it on the chapter 1 test. Therefore, we will practice using them as much as possible before the test. reading and spelling- The new story is Max Malone. The words are a little more difficult this week. Please make sure they are reviewing their spelling list throughout the week. religion- I will be sending the chapter 1 test home any day. Remember, you can guide them to find the right answer in the book. ***Pizza Hut Book It program will not be used this year. Therefore, I will come up with my own reward at the end of each month for 2 books read. Apple Day was a success, the kids seemed to enjoy it. Don't forget it is a half day on Friday and no school on Monday. Enjoy your week! Week of September 28th This Friday, October 2nd, we will be having Apple Day in our classroom for most of the day. The children can wear their PE uniforms to be more comfortable. math- We are working on Chapter 2 which includes comparing numbers and estimating. Lang. arts- we are continuing to review subject and predicate, as well as working on dictionary skills, and time-order words. social studies- We are just beginning to read chapter 1 on communities. reading and spelling- the story this week is OPT: An Illusionary Tale. The reading and spelling tests will be on Friday as usual. religion- we are completing chapter one on "The Holy Spirit guides us to live as Christians" Look for the open book test to be coming home in the near future. It was nice meeting all of you at Open House! Week of September 21st Congratulations....we all made it through our first full week! The kids are adjusting nicely, I hope you are too. This is what is happening this week... Math-we are reviewing chapter 1 on place value, the chapter 1 test will be this Thursday, September 24th. Lang. arts- this week we are focusing on subjects, predicates, combining sentences, and run-on sentences. We also wrote our first paragraph for the year. Social studies- We are going to complete our lessons on map skills and we should begin chapter 1 on Communities later in the week. Spelling and Reading- Our new reading story is called Phoebe and the Spelling Bee and the spelling list goes along with the story. The reading and spelling tests will be on Friday. Just a reminder, the vocabulary is part of the reading test and the words are written in their reading journals. Have a great week Week of September 14th Math- we are working on place value and basic math facts. We throw the math ball around every morning for math facts practice. These facts need to be learned and memorized, which means they should be working on them at home every night. Lang. arts- we are starting in unit one with types of sentences. reading and spelling- The first reading story is called Grandfather's Journey. They have copied the vocabulary down in their journals. The spelling list goes along with the story and the words are written in their planners. Reading and spelling test will be on Friday. *** In 3rd grade we do not have the children write their spelling words 3x each. However, if your child struggles with spelling, it would be a good idea to have them do that exercise at home. Social studies- we are learning to use the glossary in the book to look up the meaning of the vocabulary words being used in the lesson. Then they write the meanings down in their journals. We are beginning with skills such as map reading. Phonics- short vowel sounds. ****We begin each morning with a bible verse****
