Welcome to Mrs. Rau's Third Grade Class!

2008 - 2009

This will be a another great school year.  Our Birney Bobcats are Third Graders now, and here are some of the exciting things we will be learning this year.  

In Language Arts we will continue to build vocabulary and enhance our comprehension skills.  We will write multi-paragraph stories and improve spelling skills.  We will learn to write in cursive and answer questions with complete sentences and with more details.

In Math we will reinforce our basic addition and subtraction facts.  We will also learn to multiply and divide. We will extend our knowledge of fractions to include adding, subtracting, equivalent, simplest form, and decimal comparisons. We will learn to classify polygons and other fun Geometry skills.

In Social Studies we will continue to explore communities with a focus on our local community.  We will discover where and why people start communities, and how they grow and change.  We will explore how people work together at city, state, and national levels. We will study the history of Redondo Beach as well as the history of the local Indians. We will study economics with a focus on producers and consumers.

In Science this year we will classify various types of animals, and learn how they adapt.  We will study ecosystems, rock cycles, and the solar system, and we will explore the properties of matter, energy and light.  We have a new district adopted curriculum that includes a materials cart with lots of supplies for investigation and inquiry.

In third grade we also enjoy a very active and fun P.E. program, we have weekly vocal music instruction, and we get healthy with Hooked on Health and Live Well Kids.  We even have a garden.
