The Giver Utopia Project

The Giver Utopia Project

(7th Grade)

Due: March 21, 2011

For this assignment, you will collaborate in groups (previously chosen) and develop a utopian society. You will present your utopian society in class using any one (1) form of technology (multimedia), for example, PowerPoint, a film documentary, a website your group created, etc.  Although I want you to create your society based entirely on your group’s ideas, I will require a few important details that you need to cover in your project. Otherwise, you are encouraged to develop your perfect society as you wish.

Project Requirements:

·      The presentation must involve using some form of technology.

·      Your utopian society must include information on at least the following three: government, education, and forms of shelter for your citizens.  In other words, what do their homes/houses look like? You can create your community’s ideal home using Google SketchUp, by drawing and scanning them, or using images taken off of the internet.

·      Each member of your collaborative group must present at least one part of your project in front of the class. For example, one student will present on the community’s government, while another presents on education, and so forth.

·      Although you are graded for the overall project, you will also each be required to submit a reflective essay (four paragraphs) on your overall experience in making a utopian society. More information will be available later. Due date: March 23, 2011.

·      You will also conduct research on the Internet to learn about people's various attempts to create utopia and intentional communities. Then, will write a summary of details, facts and examples of utopia and attempts at utopian society. This summary should be three paragraphs in length. The due date for this will be March 11, 2011.
