Junior & Senior Project Requirements
How to Begin

Juniors engaging in the serious work of Research Project-based Writing assignments should begin by selecting a subject or topic which supports in-depth research.

You receive a grade in my class for successful completion of this project and its various benchmarks. Completing these projects will assist you in meeting the Leadership Prep High School and District Graduation Requirement.

Key Information About Reseach Projects:

Research does not just mean books!

You will need to seek information from a variety of sources which include reference books, books on the topic you are researching, interviews with at least to experts in the field, and more.

For Example: If you are researching architechture, construction or technology, you might consider interviewing one of your instructors or a  business owner.

If you are researching HIV/AIDS, contact  a local health center or a local physician who specializes in the treatment of infectious diseases in order to give meaning to your research.

See me if you are uncertain about the procedure for making appointments with professionals and need help to draft letters of request for support for your project.

No "Internet" papers will be accepted.

Plaigerism (see written policy) is reason to have your entire project excluded from grading.

Save Your Work!

Each year there are always electronic nightmares. Those people always have the frustration of "doing it over". Don't let that happen to YOU!

You are required to turn in copies of your notes, rough draft, and your revised paper. Your powerpoint and all other documents should be saved on a flash drive-yours!

Repeat: Save Your Work

Selecting a Topic:

Researching broad topics without a specific focus is not acceptable.

Narrow your topic so that you do not select broad topic like "sports" or "medicine" or "illness".

For Example:

Not just "sports"-which sport?

Key Qestions:

What is your position or thesis about some aspect of the sport which relates directly to your community and has a financial impact and potential solution you could develop as part of your Business Plan Proposal?

Will you be able to research  the history of the sport, especially in our Oakland Community? What is your thesis statement or position on this topic?

Remember: this is not a report!

You are being asked to research an important issue that impacts each of us economically, socially, politically, and personally in our world and community. You will be required to write a proposal for a solution to the issues which you

Information for  Seniors Regarding Senior Projects:

Senior Project Coordinators are requiring that you do the following:

  • Select and have your research topic approved by one of the Senior Project Committee Members and other school/community partners as announced.
  • Write a proposal and have the proposal signed by one of the appropriate Senior Project Committee Members.
  • Be certain that your project research includes the financial, social, and local impact of your topic.  Part of your year-long research will involve researching viable solution(s) to the problem you study.
  •   Your research must include the impact of the issue on our  Oakland community. Your research has the ability to truly shed light on issues of importance and to empower others with your work.

You will also be required to dress in appropriate business attire when you present your project before the committee and community members. You will be required to use a power point to make this presentation.

Lenth of written Junior Project:

15-20 typed pages

Length of Senior Project Requirement:  20 pages-No, this does not include the cover page, bibliography, pictures, and table of contents, but does include some of the digital presentation work for your powerpoint.

Remember, this is the culmination of a full year's work- not a few weeks or months. You can do this! We will do it together!

More Help for Seniors:

Your Leadership Prep Senior Project Advisors and Support Team Members will review  your Senior Project papers
at various benchmarks, give you professional advice on how to advance to the next step- and sit in as reviewers on our Senior Project Panel.

You will also have the assistance of our U.C. Berkeley tutors, our After School Program, Senior Advisors, College and Career Center, and Seniors who have completed this requirement!
