Participation in Government: Course Description: Walt Whitman wrote in his Democratic Vistas: "The mission of government, henceforth, in civilized lands, is...to train communities through all their grades, beginning with individuals and ending there again, to rule themselves." This civic mision is based on the democratic idea that active citizenship is essential to the health and well-being of both the person and the polity. This one semester course in Participation in Government is designed to promote active citizenship by encouraging students to understand and participate in the democratic process. The content of this course emphasizes the interaction between citizens and government at all levels: federal, state, and local. Please see Related Files below to read Course Expectations and Grading Policy. Classroom Supplies: You should have a notebook or binder for class notes. You will also need a separate notebook for your political journal. Please bring your class notebook and textbook to each class. Textbook: United States Government: Democracy in Action Richard C. Remy, Ph.D. Glencoe, McGraw Hill
