7:15 in the Computer Lab

Digital Photos and Video
Our first topic for the year will be digital photos and videos...how to create, edit and use them. We will discuss camera use; options for photo storage and appropriate video storage as well. We will also discuss ways to use this media in your classroom. Remember statistics show that 70% of what we learn, we learn visually. New article on digital photography

1. Try setting up a Picassa account and webpage to share class event pictures. Put this link on your St. Jude's class page and parents and students will be able to keep up with your class events. You will never have to change the link on your page, and can publish as many pictures as you want.

2. This Picassa account will also let you publish video that you take of student activites whether academic or for fun. Use the small digital video camera in the lab and transfer the video from the SD card to your picture folder. Then, upload the video to the Picassa site the same as you would a picture. Another website for uploading video is Fliggo.com. You can set up a free account and store up to 23 min of video. Some classroom ideas might be oral reading, poetry or students giving directions....a unique communication tool also for parents. It gives students a sense for what they look like to others. Here's a sample from the computer class site:

3. Your class page also gives you the ability to add photos. Simply click on Add Photos at the top...you can give the photo gallery a name if you choose. Go down the page to enter new photo file and click browse. Choose the location of your pictures and click on the photo you want. Save your changes. At the bottom of the page is a place where you can add a photo to the heading of your class page....photos only no video.

4. Picture Policy: If possible try to keep at least 3 students in the picture and never use last names.

5. Picassa is also a great way to edit your pictures...the download is free from Google. There are several other good ones including Snapfish.com; Kodak Gallery; Flickr.com and Photobucket.

6. Photo Essays can be creative and interesting projects for students. Photo Story 3 is a free program from Microsoft which lets students combine photos and minimal text to create a photo essay.

Cleaning up Files:

Go to the Start button and then My Computer:
You will see 3 drives that are part of the Network: H....O and S
The H Drive should show your name
Double click on the O drive and look through all the folders to see if you have any work saved in here
Double click on the S drive and look through all the folders to see if you have any work saved in here
In the S drive also check to make sure you have a folder to copy and paste your work into
If you need to create a folder do the following:
right click in an empty space and go to new and then folder
erase the new folder name and type in your name
If you found work of yours in the S or O drives simply right click and go to copy...then go back to the folder you created in the S drive and right click on top of it and go to paste. The file will now be in your folder ( and still on the S or O drives as well)
The proper way to save a file you are working on is:
file
save as ( from here you can choose the location and the name of the file)
click save
If you save to a file on the desktop your work will not be saved on the network only on your classroom computer.
If you save to the My Documents your file will be backed up to the network. It is better to do the file and save as so you can choose where the file goes.
I am hoping to have you clean up all your files by teacher convention.
Come down to the computer lab during a planning pd. or with your class if you need help with this.
