DAVID BEARD, Fours Assistant “[Children] need to explore, to get their hands dirty and their feet wet.”—Richard Louv “A child of five would understand this. Send for a child of five.”—Groucho Marx David began working at the preschool as a parent volunteer when his son Eli started as a two-day two. Three years later Eli moved on to kindergarten at our Goshen campus, but David, having realized that he loved working with children, stayed on as an assistant teacher. Now after seven years of teaching threes, fours and junior kindergarten, he knows he’s right where he needs to be. David believes that the most effective teaching occurs when children are directed by their own interests. This encourages exploration, offers opportunities for discovery, and maximizes their potential to learn. David, a 22-year veteran of the U. S. Coast Guard and Coast Guard Reserve, currently assists Alice Willingham in the four-year-old “Shining Stars” class. He, his wife Liz, and son Eli (now an eighth grader!) are in to reading, hiking, music, photography, dining out—and never met a beach they didn’t like.
