 William Faulkner, winner of the 1949 Nobel Prize in literature, was part of an old southern family and grew up in Mississippi. His novels are largely about the decay of the old South and take place in the imaginary Yoknapatawpha County, a community very much like the one in Mississippi where he lived and wrote.
