Mark Twain, born Samuel Clemens in Missouri, grew up to become one of the most important American writers of all time. Twain, whose literary works include The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, once said that America is "called the nation of inventors. And we are. We could still claim that title and wear its loftiest honors if we had stopped with the first thing we ever invented, which was human liberty."
