Test - Thursday - November, 19

The eighth graders are currently studying Magnetism.  They will discover the properties of magnets, how magnetic poles interact, and what the shape of a magnetic field is.  Their chapter project is to design and build a magnetic paper clip holder.  They will will using objects  from their daily lives that contain magnets.

For their discover activity, the eighth graders will be making a compass using a needle, a magnet, a small piece of cork, dishwashing soap and a bowl of water.

Please encourage your child to visit PHSchool.com using the web codes I have provided below. This is a wonderful online component, which allows the students to delve deeper into the content material.  PHSchool.com web codes for magnetism are cgp-4011 (magnetic field lines), cgp-4034 (data sharing)cgd-4013 (earth's magnetic field),and cga-4010 (self-assessment).

The 8th graders will be taking the New York State Science Exam in June, 2010.  This exam consists of a written component and a hands on assessment. The test is based on the New York State Core Curriculum and the student's mastery of these materials.  We will be reviewing throughout the school year.  Homework will be given daily.

All of the students have received the on line component to their science text books.  Please install this information onto your home computer.  It encompasses an abundance of activity options.
