Gifted Identification DOWNLOAD PARENT BROCHURES & TESTING REFERRAL FORMS BELOW All school districts in Ohio are required to identify students who are as gifted in four major areas: superior cognitive ability, specific academic ability, creative thinking ability, and visual or performing arts ability. Superior cognitive ability refers to high intellectual function. Specific academic ability includes high achievement in the main subject areas of reading, mathematics, social studies, and science. Visual or performing arts ability encompasses vocal and instrumental music, art, drama, and dance. Eligibility criteria for each area are defined by the state, and summarized in the Parent Brochures, PB-1, PB-2, and PB-3, below. Students who are identified as gifted are listed in a statewide database. Once a student is identified as gifted, he or she retains that designation until graduation. Although the state mandates identification of gifted students, there is no requirement that special services be offered. Furthermore, each individual school district is allowed to define its own eligibility criteria for any gifted services or programs they may establish. In Stow, the OASIS program is designed for students who have been identified as having Superior Cognitive Ability and who also meet specific program eligibility requirements. At this time, Stow-Munroe Falls Schools provides no special services exclusively for students who are identified as gifted in other areas. Teachers are encouraged to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students in their regular classroom. Students may be referred for possible gifted identification by parents, teachers, or others. Download referral forms below. Please return completed forms to the Office of Gifted Services, Lakeview Intermediate School, 1819 Graham Rd., Stow, OH 44224.
