CLASSROOM NEWS
Mrs. Beckley’s fourth grade Oasis classes are starting to work on their storytelling unit, which focuses on teaching public speaking techniques. Students will be learning the art of storytelling through various methods--including working with real-life storytellers. The fourth graders will choose a story, practice and develop their speaking skills, and ultimately present the story to their classmates.
The fourth grade students are also learning the duties of being a jury member, in preparation for trying the upcoming 5th and 6th grade mock trials. Finally, they continue to work on their centers--Spanish, computer activities, logic activities, science and more.
Mrs. Beckley’s and Mrs. Komar’s fifth grade Oasis classes are beginning their Law Unit. The Law Unit introduces students to the judicial process and culminates with students putting fairy tale characters on trial. The fifth grade students prepare the cases, and take the parts of attorneys and witnesses, while the fourth grade Oasis students act as the jury for these trials. A “judge” officiates the entire process—complete with his/her own bailiff! It promises to be an exciting adventure for everyone!
Mrs. Komar’s sixth grade Oasis classes are beginning to work on their Research/Learning Center Unit. Students, working alone or with a partner, select a topic to research and complete an in-depth, interactive learning center to share with other students. The focus of this unit is to learn and refine research skills.
Mrs. Komar’s classes have begun working with Crossmatics; A Challenging Collection of Cross-number Puzzles. While reinforcing math concepts, the puzzles challenge students to apply higher level thinking skills. A crossword-type grid and a sequence of descriptions for both across and down positions are used in these puzzles, providing students with problem-solving experiences to determine the correct number for grid positions.
Finally, all Lakeview Oasis students participate in affective lessons featuring topics such as Friendship, Stress, Perfectionism, Study Skills, and Goal Setting throughout the year. Oasis is a busy place!
