Frequently Asked Questions
Q:  What is OASIS?
A:  OASIS is an enrichment program for students in grades 4 - 8 who meet district requirements, and have been identified as gifted in the area of Superior Cognitive Ability.   At the elementary/intermediate level, OASIS is a weekly pull-out program held at Lakeview.  (4th graders are bused to Lakeview one day per week to participate.) At the middle school, OASIS is one class period per day.  OASIS is scheduled as part of Language Arts at Kimpton.

Q:  My child always gets straight As.  Why isn’t he/she in OASIS?
A:  It is a common misconception among parents, teachers, and students that qualification for OASIS is based solely on school achievement.  Many “straight A” students are not gifted, and many do not qualify for OASIS.   Not all gifted students get "straight As".  A bright child is not necessarily a gifted learner.

Q:  How do students qualify for OASIS?
A:  In order to qualify for OASIS, a student must score 130+ on a nationally normed school ability test AND achieve a composite percentile rank of 95+ on a nationally normed academic achievement test.

Q:  Can OAT (Ohio Achievement Test) scores be used?
A:  No. Ohio Achievement Test scores are not nationally normed, and therefore cannot be used for gifted identification or placement in OASIS.

Q:  What is a school ability test?
A:  Ability tests measure a student’s aptitude for learning.   The Cognitive Ability Test (CogAT) and the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) are the group ability tests commonly used in Stow-Munroe Falls to measure general intellectual (cognitive) ability.  They are NOT based on specific academic subjects like reading, math, science, or social studies.  Scores are always computed by age (not grade level) for this type of test.   Qualifying scores from individually administered IQ tests are also accepted.

Q:  What is an achievement test?
A:  Achievement tests measure what a student has learned in specific academic areas such as reading, math, science or social studies.  The Metropolitan Achievement Test (MAT), and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) are commonly administered group achievement tests.   Achievement scores are based on grade level (not age) for OASIS qualification.

Q:  When are these tests given?
A:  District-wide testing is conducted in grades 2, 3 and 5.   Individual and small group testing is coordinated by the Office of Gifted Services for eligible students throughout the year.

Q:  How do I have my child tested during the school year?
A:  You may compete the parent referral form on the OASIS website and submit it to the Office of Gifted Services for evaluation.  Students whose previous test scores fall within the screening range are eligible for retesting.   You will be notified whether your child meets the screening criteria.

Q:  May I have my child privately tested?

A:  Yes.  Individual test scores are accepted from any licensed psychologist.

Q:  Will my child have to re-qualify for OASIS every year?
A:  No.  Once a child is identified as gifted, he retains that identification throughout his or her school career.

Q:  What happens when my child reaches high school?
A:  All high-achieving students (whether they were in OASIS or not) are offered the same opportunities to participate in Honors and Advanced Placement classes.

Of special interest to 4th grade parents:

Q:  How does my child get to Lakeview on Oasis day?

A:  4th grade Oasis students take the bus to Lakeview on their assigned Oasis day.

Q:  How will he know where to go once he gets to Lakeview?
A:  Mrs. Beckley, the 4th grade Oasis teacher, meets all students at the main entrance, and escorts the group to the Oasis room.

Q:  What happens at lunchtime?
A:  4th grade Oasis students have lunch and recess with 4th grade students at Highland.
