Social Studies Project

Patriotic Symbols

Name_______________________________________________#______________

Instead of having a test over patriotic symbols, we are going to work on a project to assess your understanding of patriotic symbols, flags, and songs.

Expectations for the project:

1.      You will work in groups

2.     Each group will receive a poster board that you will put your symbols, flags, and songs on

3.     Each group will create a fictitious country.  Your group will have to agree on this, so work together.  Part of this grade will be based on how well you all worked together.

4.     For your fictitious country, you will create:

a.     A flag:  you will have to explain how and why you chose the flag you did.  What is the meaning behind the flag?  You will draw the flag on the poster

b.     A pledge of Allegiance:  You will need to write a pledge that you will recite to your flag.  You will need to think about your flag manners.  This pledge will be written on your poster

c.      An Anthem:  your country will need a national anthem.  You will have to explain what the story behind your anthem is.  This anthem or song will be written on your poster board.

d.     You will need at lease on patriotic symbol:  For instance, the United States has the Bald Eagle, the Liberty Bell and the Statue of Liberty as patriotic symbols.  What will yours be?  Why is it patriotic?  Why did you decide on this symbol?
