Dear St. Barnabas Third Grade Families:
As you may or may not know, our family is an adoptive family. We talk very openly about adoption and its many blessings. As children grow, each develop their own set of questions, and each handles their story in a special way – as do their friends. Mrs. Warn’s class has had several questions about adoption this year. Miriam and I would like to teach the class about adoption, and Mrs. Warn has given us permission to do so. In my previous life, I was an adoption educator for Adoptions of Indiana. I taught a middle childhood program on adoption geared for nine and ten year olds. I will be visiting on Tuesday, November 24th to teach an hour lesson on adoption at 12:05 p.m. My lesson will include:
· What babies need and the fact that birth families often recognize that babies cannot wait to have those needs met
· A brief overview of how adoption occurs – with an emphasis that all situations are different
· A book called, “Families are Different”
· Adoption and the Media – Looking at movie clips and mostly to clarify that adoption is forever.
If you would like, you are welcome to attend in order to better help your child understand adoption. If there are sensitive issues in your family related to adoption, please let me know. Or, please feel free to ask for your child to be excused from the lesson. I can assure you that all topics will be handled in general, with positive adoption language, and love.
God bless you and your family,
Carissa Maddox
We will spend these two days finishing up projects and sharing them with the class!
