2017 Required Summer Reading

Book Selections by Grade

Listed below are the reading choices per grade.  Students are required to read 2 books over the summer.  One book must be for the Individuals & Societies Class and one book must be for the Language & Literature.

Incoming 6th Graders

Dragon’s Gate by Laurence Yep $7.50

After accidentally killing an official in China, Otter's life is in danger, so he is sent to America where he learns the reality of being a Chinese immigrant, working in the brutal cold, and awful conditions. Otter is filled with disgust and becomes desperate to return back home to defeat the Manchu.                         

A Land Remembered by Patrick Smith $15.00

Set during Florida’s pioneer days, this is the story of the MacIvey family whose history is recounted over a hundred-year span. This novel will leave you with a deeper appreciation for our home state of Florida.

The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine          $9.50                                           

In the late 1950's, twelve year olds Marlee and Liz become fast friends when they start middle school. When Liz leaves school, the two must be willing to take on segregation- and the dangers their friendship could bring to both their families- to remain friends.

Almost Astronauts 13 Women Who Dared  by Tanyalee Stone   $14.00


The true story of 13 women who proved they were tough enough to challenge the government. Although the Mercruy 13 women did not make it into space, their example empowered young women to take their place as pilots and commanders.

This is the immensely engaging and inspiring true account of an enterprising African teenager who constructed a windmill from scraps to create electricity for his entire community.


Peak by Roland Smith                                                                                 $8.50


After Peak Marcello is arrested for scaling a New York City skyscraper, he's left with two choices: wither away in Juvenile Detention or to go live with his long-lost father who runs a climbing company in Thailand.
