Mr. I's - Question of the Week

Can you really tell the temperature by listening to the chirping of a cricket?

Science photo 692

Marvelous! Yes, you can, if you know the right formula for the right species of cricket. To calculate it: Take the number of chirps in one minute. Subtract 40. Divide by 4. Add 50. That will give you the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. For degrees Celsius, take the number of chirps in one minute, subtract 40, divide by 7, and then add 10.
