Digestion
The breakdown of food into molecules

Digestion

In preparation of our exploration of cells and the molecules of life, we will explore the role that digestion plays in supplying your body with the molecular building blocks needed to rebuild your body from food.

Here's our five day plan.  Please note this is subject to change if you require more time to understand this information.

Day Topic/Activity Goals
1 Overview of Digestion/See-Think-Wonder Students will understand...

1.  The role of enzymes in digesting food
2.  The role of enzymes in processing molecules
3.  The role of enzymes in building your body.
4.  The role of cell in producing and housing enzymes.
5.  The relationship of enzymes and proteins.
2 Enzyme Action/See-Think-Wonder
3 Building your body one molecule at a time
4 Enzymes and their many relationships to cells
5 Review of key concepts

Day 1 Activity:

  1. Fill out today's handout with your name, date and today's learning goals.  (A copy of today's handout can be downloaded below.)
  2. As individuals or in pairs, you will view the digestion animation, then complete the "I see..." section of this week's handout.  Use full sentences to describe what you see in detail.  For example, describe the size, shape and color of each item in the animated drawings.
  3. Be prepared to present what you saw to the class.  I will also be asking you how viewing this animation affected your previous thinking about digestion.  For example, how did viewing this animation change your understanding about the digestive process?
Day 2 Activity:

  1. Imagine you have a curious younger brother or sister in first grade, how would you explain what happens to food once you swallow it?
  2. As a class we will view, the enzyme animation.  As we go through the slides, please record the following terms and their definitions: Enzyme, molecule, specific, function, shape.
  3. Use full sentences to describe how this information changes the way you think about digestion.  Be as specific and detailed as possible.  Strive for excellence.
  4. Be prepared to present what you saw to the class.
