Introduction to the Course Structure
Welcome to the Real World You become what you do. This year we will become scientists, engineers and biotechnologists by doing what scientists, engineers and biotechnologists do. We will create experiments as scientists, design tools and instruments to allow us to test our ideas as engineers and practice our laboratory skills as biotechnologists.
We start the year with a unit on soap bubbles. After you develop the skill to follow scientific recipes called procedures, you will design an experiment to find the best (optimum) soap bubble mix using only two ingredients (water and liquid detergent). You will then create a laboratory procedure that will allow you to reliably compare a variety of different soap bubble recipes. Once perfected you will then design tests of common additives to strengthen your soap bubbles.
As we experiment will increase our base of knowledge by conducting conducting information searches on the web. We will form groups to share that information in order to select the best candidates for materials to use as soap bubble additives.
As a professional community of scientists we will then publish and share the results of our experiments with others
In this section of my website, you will find links to the weekly unit subpages listed in the leftmost vertical navigation menu. On these subpages, you will find a rough draft schedule of the weekly activities. Please be patient and remain flexible as it takes considerable amounts of time to keep this information up to date. Consider these as rough drafts, which may be subject to change depending on unforseen circumstances beyond our control. The final word on what we do in class is determined by the results of our experiments, which often take surprising and interesting turns. Such is the nature of scientific research.
Have fun and remember "NEVER GIVE UP!"
