NoteStar Bibliographic Tool
Introduction Our learning goal is to two-fold. Beyond the academic goals, I hope that you will embrace these tools to help you succeed in life. In this series of activities, you will develop the following skills: - How to use the Internet to find useful information (in this case, information on careers).
- How to carefully record the information in an organized manner. This allows quick and easy retrieval.
Before you begin, remember that you may use the - keyboard sequence to move from one open application to another on Windows computers. While holding down the key you may use the key multiple times to scroll through the list of open applications. What is NoteStar? NoteStar automatically collects the web addresses for you as you surf the Internet. It provides you with a means of storing your notes on each web address that you decide to save. Once you have selected and saved your comments on a web address the software can automatically format that information into a standardized bibliography based upon the MLA or ABA standard format. Your first subtask is to register yourself in Notestar. Once you have registered in NoteStar, you must follow the directons to add a bookmark link to your browser page. This bookmark link will allow you to use NoteStar to collect information as you surf. After this intitial setup, when you find information you would like to store, you simple click on the NoteStar bookmark for a popup window. After a brief login, Notestar saves your notes and formats your bibliographies.
Subtask One: Register in NoteStar Procedure: - Click on the NoteStar registration hyperlink listed below.
- Scroll down the screen. Look at the bottom of the left column to the phrase, "Students, start here."
- Register as follows:
- Use the following username first initial lastname period #. For example , let's say I'm a student in Period 2, since my name is Gregory Louie, I would type in glouie2 for my user name.
- Our school zipcode is 27707. Remember this it is very important.
- Select any password that you will easily remember. Once I enroll you into my class, I will be able to retrieve your password should you lose it.
- Please note your new username it will have our school zipcode attached to it. It should look something like this: glouie2_27707.
- Click on Go to Student Home.
- Click on Click Here for Setup Instructions in the box on the left under Setup Guide.
- Follow the instructions on that page.
- If you have a popup blocker, please disable it.
- Once you are registered I need to enroll you in my class. You will not be able to use NoteStar for any of your Project work until I do so. Please be patient.
- After I register you in my class, you will have access to your project assignments.
- The first project is called "Biotechnology Careers"
- The second project is called "Human Disease/Biomedical Research"
Subtask 2: Create your own subtopics
- Once you have selected your period from the drop down menu, then select the project we are currently working on.
- You will then have to create your own subtopic.
- Click on the link that says Go to NoteStar to Add New Topics and Sub-topics.
- For the first project the subtopics will be different careers, one subtopic for each career.
- For the second project the subtopics will be different aspects of the disease or research you are studying. Please see the Project 2 subpage for this information.
- You must fill out both the Title and the Description entry boxes before your subtopic is saved in NoteStar.

NoteStar
As you retrieve information on the web, NoteStar allows you to stores your notes as it automatically saves the website address information. Later, when your notes become extensive, NoteStar can help you stay organized and will print out a properly formatted bibliography.
