Paragraph Set-Up
Topic Sentence: You need a sentence that brings us back to your thesis and alerts us as to what the topic of this particular paragraph is about.
Country music has had a major impact on the music world, but in order to understand its impact, it is crucial to look at how it started.
Concrete Detail: You need research to prove/back up your topic sentence. It SHOULD NOT ALL BE PARAPHRASED!!!!! You want to include several direct quotes into your paper. DO NOT PARAPHRASE most of your research. You only want one line/piece of research. You DO NOT want back to back pieces of research. Each piece needs to be cited.
One of the biggest factors in the beginning of country must was “Merle Haggard who began the trend of using acoustic guitars and signing around a campfire” (Jones 3).
Commentary: After EVERY piece of research – you must explain it – bring it back to your thesis.
Merle’s contribution to this musical movement went beyond that of any other musician. He was very influential in the movement and helped to start a national trend.
