Accelerated Reader (ACR) is a personalized reading practice program to match each student’s current level. ACR is a computerized quiz program that we have at school. Once your child has finished reading a book (either at school or home) they are asked to take test. The test checks their comprehension and also helps up track their reading progress at home and school. We will send home reports so that you can help monitor their progress.
Please note that there are ACR lists with all of the books in our ACR system, and they are being updated a couple times a year.  Listed by title, grade level and author at the bottom of this page.

Here are some strategies to help your child select an appropriate level ACR.

When your child is self-selecting their book they can think of the Goldilocks Strategy because everything in the story needs to be "just right!"

If their answer to the questions in any given category is YES, then the book is probably:

TOO EASY

  • Have you read the book lots of times before?
  • Do you understand the story very well?
  • Do you know almost every word?
  • Can you read it smoothly?

JUST RIGHT

  • Is this book new to you?
  • Do you understand almost all of the book?
  • Are there just a few words per page that you aren't sure of?
  • When you read, are some places smooth and some places choppy?

TOO HARD

  • Are there more than 5 words on a page that you don't know?
  • Are you confused about what is happening in most of the book?
  • When you read, does it sound pretty choppy?
  • Is everyone else busy and unable to help you?

Independent reading is an activity that your child can do by themselves.  It is important that your child is comprehending and understanding what they read.  It is also important that your child talk about what they read.  This will allow you to assess if your child is truly reading and understanding.  Below are short, 5 minute activities that you can do with your child after they have read independently.

Have your child write a thought on a post-it note while they read and share it with you afterwards.

Illustrate their favorite scene from the story.

Retell you what they read in five sentences (across 5 fingers).

Make a prediction.

Make a connection.

Read their favorite part to you aloud.

Write a question to the character.

Tell about their favorite part.

Tell about their favorite character.

Tell about the problem in the story.

Tell how the problem is solved.

Tell about the setting.

Tell about who the characters remind you of.

Write questions that you have about the story.
