Acronyms

There are many acronyms used in Special Education. Here are a few of the most common:

EEN: Exceptional Educational Need

IEP: Individualized Education Plan

CD: Cognitive Disability

LD: Learning Disability

EBD: Emotional/Behavioral Disability

OHI: Other Health Impairment

OI: Orthopedic Impairment

SP/L: Speech/Language Impairment

OT: Occupational Therapy (relates to fine motor movements, such as
handwriting)

PT: Physical Therapy (related to large motor movements, such as walking)

LEA: Local Education Authority (Usually the principal).

IDEA: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This is the federal law
that provides funding for special education.
