THE GOSSMAN GAZETTE

Our First Grade News May 2012

April Showers Bring May Flowers!

With all the rain in April, we should be getting lots of May Flowers.  Watch the weather in the morning to dress your student for the changing weather.  We will have additional recess when possible to enjoy the warmer weather.

We will be studying butterflies this month by watching our own butterfly garden.  Even though I have done this every year, I still am amazed at the miracle of transformation.  It is a symbolic representation of this group of first graders who will be 2nd graders all too soon.  Continue to work with your student on reading and math skills to best prepare them for 2nd grade.

Coming Soon:

Summer Tutoring Info

Math:     We will be starting our Time Unit.  First grade is responsible for time on the hour and half hour with digital and analog clocks.  They will also learn how to tell lapsed time.  All of the students need lots of practice at home to tell time with analog and digital clocks. We have started on our subtraction fact tests.

Reading:

We are working on Theme 8: Our Earth. We are learning about vowel pairs. Students should remember that when 2 vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.  We are continuing to discuss problem solving, sequencing of events and the difference between fantasy and reality.

Writing:

We will be completing our year of writing with a writing that will be scored and saved for their 2nd grade teacher.  We will also complete an informational writing about ladybugs.

Dear Time:

We will continue to take DEAR Time for independent reading.  Students should periodically bring in new books and exchange for the ones in their DEAR bag to keep the time fun and interesting.

Social Studies

We are completing our new unit, Market Economy, which we have tied to our math unit on money.   We have been discussing jobs, goods, services and the difference between wants and needs.

Summer Camp:

This year’s theme is Disney.  Students will enjoy many engaging activities, projects and field trips. See the office to sign up for the fun!
