Proofreading

These topics are covered in targeted class mini-lessons and also individually as part of the editing process and occur as each student moves through their writing process and prepares a “final draft.” This is the stage where students are asked to “polish” their drafts to the point where they are “publishable in quality.” Or, in other words, proofreading enables the writer to catch those small embarrassing mistakes that can make or break a piece of writing.

Common problems we will focus on will include:

A.     Misspelled words

B.     Improperly capitalized words

C.     Subjects and verbs that disagree

D.     Pronouns and antecedents that disagree in number or gender

E.      Incorrect verb forms, particularly with irregular verbs

F.      Inaccurate punctuation that dilutes the meaning of a sentence

G.     Shifts in tense

H.     Shifts in person

I.        Run-ons and sentence fragments
