Fourth Grade Curriculum Overview

 

We follow the Learning Standards of NYS, the recommendations of the Interdiocesan curriculum committee and the guidelines of the Diocese of Rochester.

 

Religion: Content Focus and Learning outcomes for Preschool Through 5th grade are organized along the Four Pillars of Faith and 14 Faith Themes which are inspired by the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

 

v     WORD–Revelation, Scripture, Creedal Concepts

v     WORSHIP–Sacraments, Prayer/Worship, The Liturgical Year

v     COMMUNITY–The Church, Faith and Identity, Personal Growth, Relationships

v     DISCIPLESHIP–Christian Lifestyle, Morality, Justice and Peace, Service/Outreach

 

*Fourth grade emphasis on Commandments and the sacraments of Matrimony, Reconciliation and the Eucharist.

 

Mathematics:  Topics covered include Place Value; Comparing/Ordering Numbers; Counting Money and Making Change; Problem Solving; Rounding Numbers; Adding/ Subtracting Whole Numbers (6 digits); Properties of Addition/Subtraction; Mental Math; Estimating Addition/Subtraction; Time/Elapsed Time; Line Plots; Range, Median, Mode Average; Work Backwards; Pictographs; Bar/Line Graphs; Coordinate Geometry; Multiplication/Division Facts; Multiplying 1&2 digits; Factors; Estimating products; Graphing; Estimating quotients; Three Dimensional Figures; Geometry; Fractions.

 

Science:  Topics covered include Our Changing Earth; Earthquakes and Volcanoes; Properties of Matter; Metric Measurement; Force and Motion; Magnetism; Electrical Energy; Nutrition; Weather and Climate; Body’s Delivery System.

 

English/Language Arts: 

In Reading we focus on; Setting; Sequence; Compare/Contrast; Author’s Purpose; Characters; Visualizing; Theme; Context Clues; Making Judgments; Drawing Conclusions; Generalizing; Predicting; Paraphrasing; Summarizing.

 

In Language Arts we focus on: literature, grammar, narrative writing, letter writing, poetry and DBQ’s.

 

Social Studies:  Topics covered include New York State Geography, Resources and Regions; Early People; Colonial Times; American Revolution; Western Frontier; Civil War; Growth of Big Business; Immigration; Local History (Pittsford/Erie Canal).
