Work Stations!
For one hour each afternoon the fabulous children of 1-M are engaged in Work Stations. Work Stations are zones within our classroom where students work independently to explore and expand their Language Arts skills and strategies. A variety of activities reinforce and extend the learning that occur throughout the year. During this time children are actively engaged in practicing reading, spelling, writing, word work, grammar, handwriting, and vocabulary in a meaningful and relevant context. Work stations are an integral part of classroom instruction. (We love them!)
The Stations are:
- Word Work Station
- Spelling Station
- Puppet Station (children practice comprehension strategies here)
- Vocabulary Station
- Handwriting Station
- Library Station
- Grammar Station
- Big Book Station
- Computer (children practice high frequency words on a power point)
BONUS! Work Station time is also used as a way for children to learn time management basics. On the first day of each week, children fill out a Work Station Tracking Sheet. The children plan out which Stations they wish to work through each day. Once they complete the Station work they check off the corresponding box. When finished with their work for the day, the children may read independently or with a partner. On Friday, the children turn in their Station products for grading.
