Welcome to K-2!
November 6, 2009 MAIL Since we met Mr. M this week, your child will be getting mail from me over the weekend. Watch for a post card from Ridin-Hy with their reading words! READING We will meet Little Miss I who is an incredible inventor. Watch for I homework to come home on Monday. If you have back homework, this would be a good time to catch up on it. Thank you! MATH We will continue our unit in math next week which will concentrate on the numbers 10-20. I’m pleased with their numbers-we still have a few reversals, but it’s only November! Every morning, when they finish their morning work, they write their numbers on the back of their page. Most can go to 30 and some can go to 100! Check their papers each day to see how far your child can go! RELIGION In Religion, we will talk about “My church family is a sign of God’s love. CONFERENCES I will attach your conference time to your child’s mail folder next Friday (sorry, I planned on doing it today, but Mrs.Lasch didn’t have time to get them to me). If the time isn’t going to work for you, drop me a note. I look forward to seeing each and every single one of you. Please try to keep it to 15 minutes for other people are waiting-I know I could talk for an hour about each child, but we’re really on a tight schedule. Please bring any questions with you that you might have. SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR. Our Scholastic book fair will be the week of conferences (November 16-20, in the library). You may send in money any day to purchase books. If you would rather pick up the books, when you come in for conferences you may. The children will circle the books they would like. We have explained it is only a WISH list and you are under no obligation to buy anything. The book fair will be set up in the library all week and you are welcome to stop at any time. VETERAN’S DAY We will talk about the Veteran’s next week. Thanks to them, we have our precious freedom. We will make some cards for them and Mr. Galvin ( who works at the VA hospital) will deliver them. THANKSGIVING DINNER Last year, we supplied food for a needy family in our parish for Thanksgiving. I would like to do it again this year. I will have a sign-up sheet in the hall during conferences so you may choose something to send in. I know I ask a lot, but I hope everyone could at least send in a can of something. Jeannie Pitkin, our outreach worker will deliver the food for us. This year, we will only be supplying food for one family-so we will be adding gift certificates to Price Chopper and Hannaford to our list. All food and gift certificates need to be brought in on Tuesday, November 24th so we can deliver it. RELIGION TABLE We have a Religion table in our room. When a child needs a “time-out”, we are going to send the child to the prayer table to ask for guidance. What a much more positive way-and we will get the same results. Did you know that discipline comes from the word disciple? I tell them daily that they are my disciples, for they are all my helpers, just as the disciples were Jesus’ helpers. So, discipline is to become like a disciple - we are trying! LAUGH OF THE WEEK We have been trying to learn the Pope’s name and the Bishop’s. I told them to think about Old Mother Hubbard to remember the bishop’s name. READING We’ll review all of our words and introduce “is” and “said”. They are doing pretty well. I will share with you, at conference, the evaluation I have given them. I do not expect them to be perfect (only God is), but it will give you a good indication if your child is really struggling in any area. THANKSGIVING DINNER Last year, we supplied food for two families for Thanksgiving. I would like to do it again this year. (adults only) October 7 – Field trip September 18, 2009 FIRST WEEK We survived our first full week of school. If you don’t see too much work coming home - we’ve still been busy! I have spent a lot of time going over routines and working on respect. The time we spent on it will make the rest of the year go smoothly. We also had two birthday parties and our first assembly about fundraisers this week. We have a very child-centered room. When I asked the children what they would like to learn this year, most of them said “reading”. Watch for a traveling book to come home to see what your child wants to learn! They are a delightful group – Mrs. Pavelec and I are certainly enjoying getting to know their little personalities. ROOM MOTHERS Thank you to everyone who volunteered to be room mothers or fathers. You may sign up at Open House for parties, field trips, mystery reader and help! VACATION OR SICK DAYS If your child is out of school for a vacation or is sick, I will need a note. I will keep all of your child’s work in his/her mailbox to pick up when they return. I know many of you would like it ahead of time, but I just never know how much work we will get through. Thanks for being understanding about this matter. LABEL EVERYTHING Please label all sweaters and sweatshirts that come to school. You cannot believe the amount of clothing that I accumulate that does not have a name. I know that clothes are very expensive and I do not want you to have to replace yours. This goes for jackets, too-if they get left on the playground, we’ll know who to return it to. ACCIDENTS If your child has an “accident” and brings home our clothes, please return them in a timely fashion so others may use them. Once when a child had an accident, I told them not to worry that I would give them a pair of “my” underwear. They looked at me strangely and responded “but Mrs. Hynes, they’ll never fit!” LUNCH AND MILK Our lunch program is off to a great start. It is $2 a lunch or if you want to pre-pay for 20 lunches, you will get a free one. Milk is $.55 per day. Thanks for telling me what your child would like each day. SNACK Snacks have been wonderful! You have been very good about sending a snack and a drink each day. CLASS LIST WILL BE COMING! I am sending home a sheet for you to sign up for our class list. It is great for birthday parties, but it is not mandatory that you give out private information. If you want your name and number given to other class members, please send in the sheet on Monday. Thank you. Please keep it in a handy spot so you can refer to it for birthday parties or so your child can call a friend. READING We will review letters I,J,K,L,M,N,O,P,Q,R,S and T. We will learn the word “the” next week. Please see how many places your child can find it - in books, on cereal boxes, in stores, etc. RELIGION We will talk about our five senses.
