GETTING STARTED

Welcome to Kindergarten and the beginning of your child’s school adventure! It is very important that your child gets off to a good start. You can help by seeing to it that he or she gets plenty of sleep each night, eats a good breakfast each morning (either at home or at school), and attends school regularly. Please read the following pages to learn about important procedures and policies of our classroom and Frost School.

SUPPLY FEE

I realize that money is short right now with all of the back-to-school expenses, but please send your child’s supply money in as soon as you are able. The school supply fee is $20.00. It is school policy that students may not go on class field trips or receive their report cards until all supply money and lunch money is paid.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance in Kindergarten in mandatory. If your child has more than 16 unexcused absences, he or she will be retained in Kindergarten.

CUSTODY PAPERS AND EMERGENCY NUMBERS

All custody papers must be on file in the office. Without custody papers we cannot stop the biological father or mother from picking up the child. Also, the people that you list on the information sheet as emergency contacts are the only people that can pick your child up. The people on the list are also the ones we will call if we cannot get in touch with a parent.

HOW KINDERGARTEN HAS CHANGED

Kindergarten has changed tremendously over the years. In the past it was a year to learn social skills and working together in a group. In our world today, skills that were once taught in first grade are now learned in Kindergarten. By the end of Kindergarten, the children are expected to know and write their numbers to 20, count to 50, spell out loud and write their first and last name, know all the letters both uppercase and lowercase, and the sounds associated with each letter, plus many other skills. They will also be expected to read about 50 sight words.

FOLDERS AND PAPERS

Your child will have a folder that he or she will bring home every day with the daily papers. Please check your child's book sack every day. Sometimes children forget to tell you about up coming events, or papers they have to give you. Please take time to go over your child's papers with him or her. Every Monday I will send home a weekly class newsletter telling you what we will be doing in class that week, and your child’s discipline report for the previous week. Please make sure your child’s folder is in his or her booksack every morning. Please put any notes or money that your child needs to give me in this folder. I will check it each day. All money should be put in an envelope and labeled. Unless otherwise stated, all checks should be made out to Frost School.

DISCIPLINE

The following poem is on our discipline chart in our classroom.

Frog on the lily pad,

Go Frog Go!

Frog on the brown log,

Slow Frog Slow!

Frog in the water,

Whoa Frog Whoa!

Frog in the red fish’s belly,

No Frog No!

Each child has his or her own "frog" that will start each day on the lily pad. Having to move the frog to the log will result in a one on one talk with the teacher and possibly time out. Moving to the water will result in loss of part or all of recess or another activity such as snacks. Moving to the red fish’s belly will result in a referral to the office. I will give each child several warnings before they have to move their frog. At each step, (except the last one) if the child shows good behavior for an extended length of time, he or she can move back up to the previous step. Actions that involve hurting another student or other serious offences will result in immediate referral to the office without moving through the other steps.

OUR CLASS WEB SITE

For those of you with internet access, we have a class web site. I will be posting the class newsletter there and other information. I also will have a photo album there for the year, adding pictures from the activities we do. For those of you with email, I will send out an email each week when I update the site. The web site is The school web site is

SNACKS AND BIRTHDAYS

Approximately once a month you will be assigned a day to send snacks for the class. Starting the week of August 27th, I will send home a calendar with assigned days for each child. The children will bring snacks for the class every Monday through Thursday. Every Friday, they should bring 50 cents or $1.00 to buy snacks at the concession stand. The snacks you send can be anything like cookies, fruit roll ups, little debbie cakes, individual bags of gunny bears/worms/etc., or individually bagged chips. Basically anything your child likes to snack on is fine. Individually wrapped things work best. The drinks should be individual drinks like capri suns or other drinks in a pouch, or the little plastic juice bottles. Please do not send gallon jugs of punch. They do not work well at all. I will let you know how many are in the class so you know how many to send. On the days your child is bringing snacks, you can send them with your child or you can drop them off in the office. Snack time will be around 12:30 or 1:00 in the afternoon. Please make sure you drop them off before then.

I know that birthdays are important events in the lives of our children, but I would ask that if all the children will not receive an invitation to a birthday party, that you not send them to school to be handed out. I have to consider the feelings of all the children in the classroom. It is very hard when some children do not get an invitation and don’t understand why. If you would like to send cupcakes for the class on your child’s birthday, I will assign that as your snack day for that month.

PARTIES/CELEBRATIONS

We have 4 "celebrations" in Kindergarten.

FALL FUN DAY is in October. This is an all day event with many fun as well as educational activities. Because the activities span the entire day, parents do not attend this event.

CHRISTMAS PROGRAM AND PARTY
The Christmas program and party are usually held on the last full day of school before Christmas vacation. Parents, granparents, aunts, uncles, and family friends are encouraged to attend.

VALENTINE'S DAY
On Valentine's Day, the children take a few minutes to exchange Valentines and have a snack. Parents do not attend.

EASTER EGG HUNT
The Easter egg hunt and Easter Party are usually held on the last day before Easter Vacation. Parents are encouraged to attend and come early to help hide the eggs.

FIELD TRIPS We usually go on 1 field trip a year in the Spring. Parents are invited to come.

REST TIME

Students do not have to sleep but must lay quietly on their mat for about 40 minutes.

DISMISSAL

The bus driver and I must have notes if your child needs to get off the bus at a different stop or is supposed to go home with someone else. I also must have a note if your child is going to be a car rider instead of a bus rider. Calling the office about a change in transportation is for emergency situations only. When possible, please have these arrangements set before school starts each day. If we do not receive notes, the child will be put on the regular bus that they ride every day. This information as well as a lot of other "good stuff" is in the student handbook. Please read the entire student handbook. There is a lot of good information in there.
