Vocabulary Sentence Grading Most weeks the children will have vocabulary sentences to write. Sentences should have at least 5 third grade words. This does not mean they should only have 5 words. Words that they have been writing since first grade don't count. We will spend time discussing what constitutes a 3rd grade word in class. They will be graded according to the following point system. 5 points will be deducted for every misspelled vocabulary word. 5 points will be deducted for every sentence missing end punctuation. 5 points will be deducted for every sentence without a capital letter at the beginning. 5 points will be deducted for every sentence that makes no sense. 2 points will be deducted for other misspelled words other than the vocabulary word. 2 points will be deducted for every other incorrect punctuation and capitalization error.
10 points will be added to work that goes beyond expectations. For every paper that is a personal best, regardless of grade, will be given a quality point. Personal best means it is very neatly done.
Quality Points are given on a chart. For most written assignments given, the children will have the opportunity to earn a quality point for effort and neatness. After 5 points the child receives a piece of gum and when they fill the whole chart, they can have another treat. This is a wonderful way of motivating them to do their best work always. I find it works better than returning papers to be done over.
