Sometimes parents ask what skills their child should have coming into third grade. Here are some guidelines that may be helpful to you. MATH - skip count by 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s
- recognize patterns and number relations
- be fluent in basic addition and subtraction facts to 18
- understand key words for story problems such as: in all, difference, all together, less, left, how many more
- know the value of money: penny, nickel. dime, quarter and half-dollar,knowledge of coin combinations
- know time to the nearest half hour and minute
- know basic terms of measurement such as inch, foot, centimeter
- add and subtract with three digit numbers
- add and subtract with regrouping two digit numbers
- explain in words how a problem is solved
READING - be able to use and spell one hundred high frequency words (see word list)
- use word attack skills such as: phonics, break apart words, context clues
- be familiar with story elements such as: characters, setting, problem, events, ending
- identify details and support in a paragraph
- draw conclusions or make a simple inference about characters, events, setting, or ending
- read with fluency and expression, and stop at natural pauses, periods, etc.
OTHER capitalize the first letter of a name and the first letter of the first word in a sentence know telephone number and address (city, state, and zip code) have some orientation to writing paper including spacing, using the whole line and writing a rough draft can form all manuscript letters, upper and lower case knows alphabetical order
