This course introduces students to the history of the United States beginning with the Reconstruction period through the present. Using a chronological approach to instruction, students study the political, economic, social, geographic, and cultural developments that have changed the United States from a mostly agrarian nation into an industrial superpower. Special emphasis is placed on the expansion of American democracy and free enterprise in North America, and the spread of its ideals and influence around the world. All students must complete a written research project in this course.
