Units of Study Units of Study

Below each unit title you will find the Enduring Understandings for each unit.  An enduring understanding is a key point that you will learn in the unit.

Unit 1 Nature and Purpose of Government

  • People need rules to meet their basic needs.

Unit 2 Values and Principles of Democracy 

  • People make rules based on their cultural and historical heritage.

Unit 3 The Constitution 

  • Written rules provide people a framework to pursue structure and order in society.

Unit 4 The Legislative Branch 

  • People entrust legislatures to make and over-see laws that represent their interests.

Unit 5 The Executive Branch 

  • Leaders are chosen to “preserve, protect, and defend…” the interests of the people.

Unit 6 The Judicial Branch 

  • To address the competing interests of people, government must balance the making of law with the enforcement of law.

Unit 7 Public Policy and Social Issues 

  • Principles and values influence governments to make policy affecting citizens and nations.
