We started our unit on linear equations today.  Students worked with rates of change, tables, graphs, equations, and worked in their journals today.  They will continue to get practice writing equations as well as making tables and graphs until Thanksgiving Break.  There will be a short quiz on graphing and making tables on Tuesday, November 24.  After break, students will learn the different forms of linear equations:  slope-intercept, point-slope, and standard form.  There will be a quiz on rate of change, tables, and intercepts on Tuesday, December 1.  The test on this unit is tentatively planned for Thursday, December 10.

We are currently working in chapter 5.  Students reviewed the coordinate plane yesterday.  Today, we worked with relations and functions.  Students will get more practice with relations and functions on Monday.  On Tuesday, we will review these topics in preparation for a Quest on Wednesday, November 18.  We will begin chapter 6 on writing and graphing linear equations next Thursday.

  • October 30, 2009

Students took the test on chapter 3 today.  On Monday, we will begin chapter 4 on using proportional reasoning.  This chapter will take approximately 7 days to complete.  Next week, we will review and practice problems involving ratios, proportions, percents, percents of change, probability, and odds.  There will be a graded assignment on ratios and proportions on Wednesday.  The following week, we will work with direct and inverse variation.  There will be a 75-point Quest on this chapter, tentatively planned for Wednesday, November 11.

The literal equations quiz has been postponed until Monday to allow more time for review and practice.  Due to a 7th grade trip to the Lyric next Thursday, the test on chapter 3 will now be on Friday, October 30.

Part 2 of the greenhouse project will be assigned on Monday.  This part will be due on Monday, November 2.

  • October 9, 2009

We are finished with 1-variable statistics and matrices.  Next week, we will begin chapter 3 on solving equations.  Students will begin by solving 1-step equations and quickly build to solving multi-step equations with the variable on both sides.  There will be a quiz on this material on Monday, October 19.  Then, we will explore and solve literal equations.  The literal equations quiz is tentatively scheduled for Friday, October 23.  Then, we will solve word problems involving equations.  The test on chapter 3 is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, October 28.

Students have been assigned a long-term project on the Greenhouse effect.  The first phase of this project is to run experiments and collect data.  This part of the project is due on Friday, October 23.

Tomorrow, we will begin a short unit on 1-variable statistics and matrices.  Students will review measures of central tendency, create 5-number summaries, make box-and-whisker plots, and use matrices to organize and analyze data.  There will be a 75-point "Quest" on this material, tentatively scheduled for Friday, October 9.

To allow more time for study and practice, the test on Chapter 2 will be postponed to Monday, September 28!

  • September 15, 2009

We are currently working in chapter 2 on sets of numbers.  We have covered the different sets of real numbers and reviewed integer operations.  There will be a quiz on this material tomorrow.  Then, we will review operations with rational numbers.  There will be a quiz on rational numbers on Tuesday, September 22.  To finish chapter 2, we will also work more with word problems.  The test for this chapter is tentatively scheduled for Friday, September 25.

  • September 4, 2009

Students took the test on chapter 1 today.  Next week, we will begin chapter 2 on real numbers.  Students will learn about the sets of numbers, review integer and rational number operations, work with square roots, and write equations from given scenarios (word problems).  Chapter 2 will take approximately 3 weeks to cover.  Students will be assigned a graphic organizer project that will be due on Monday, September 14.  The first quiz on this chapter is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, September 16.  However, pop quizzes can be given at any time!  I hope everyone enjoys the 3 day weekend!!

  • August 25, 2009

We are currently working in chapter 1 on getting familiar with expression and equations.  We have reviewed order of operations and students have learned about open sentences and combining like terms.  We will spend the rest of this week learning the properties of real numbers.  There will be a quiz on the material covered so far on Monday, August 31.  Then, we will discuss numberless graphs.  The test on chapter 1 is tentatively scheduled for Friday, Sept. 4.

After school help sessions will begin next week for those students that are interested.  Please refer to my syllabus or contact me if you would like to know times and days.

Welcome to Algebra I!  On Wednesday, I will be going over the syllabus and the expectations of the course.  On Thursday, I will administer a basic skills test to be sure that all students are prepared for the concepts and skills that we cover in Algebra I.  On Friday, we will begin chapter 1.  More on that unit soon!
